News From Far North Queensland

"With five weeks to go until the Tropical Tryhards from Cairns tackle the 50km Coastrek walk, three of the team set out yesterday on a seven hour jaunt along the Goldfields Track from the Mulgrave River valley, south to Babinda. With so many teams from Sydney entered, we thought our preperation would probably be a stark contrast to those heading out on the same day and time along the actual course route. With only Deb surviving from the 2011 team that did the 100km Coastrek Kim and Sue have joined the team and I (Tim) am the token bloke along to mainly destroy spider webs that house giant Golden Orbs...

3 WEEKS TO GO!
Coastrek starts FRIDAY 2nd March

Information Night Success

The Sydney Coastrek Information sessions last night at The Fred Hollows Foundation were a great success – and well attended.

Thank you all for making that extra effort to get there on a Tuesday evening – and thank you also to Brain Doolan – CEO of The Fred Hollows Foundation for speaking, and continuing to inspire us to go that extra step.

A BIG thank you must go to Ben and Fraya – two of the blind team and their wonderful guide Diane for being there last night. You ALSO continue to inspire us totally with your amazing effort and challenge in walking the Sydney Coastrek.

For those that were not able to make it – we are in the process of creating a video of it, which you will be able to view under Plan and Train on our Coastrek website  - soon!

In the mean time – read more to view the Event Day Information Sheet 2012 that was handed out.

Target Tips!!

By participating in this amazing personal challenge, you are helping The Fred Hollows Foundation take on the global challenge of eliminating avoidable blindness!

Each team of four is required to raise a minimum of $1600 before fundraising closes on the 20th of March. Raising the $1600 can be as simple as each team member asking 16 family or friends to sponsor them for just $25 for this year’s Coastrek. More significantly, that’s potentially 16 people who will have the chance to have their sight restored like five-year-old Chien from Vietnam.

If you’re one of the outstanding teams who have already exceeded the minimum, don’t stop! For this year’s event, we’ve set a target to raise an incredible $1,000,000 to help us continue restoring sight to the needlessly blind. But we need your help to get there!
Tips for hitting those targets!

Most of you will already know that you can send emails to get donations and thank sponsors from your online fundraising account. You can also link your fundraising page to your Facebook and Twitter accounts to encourage your friends to make a gift.  But here are a couple more creative ideas to raise those sight restoring dollars!
  • Keep your page updated and repost to your Facebook profile!
You might have emailed your friends once, but sometimes friends who mean to donate don’t quite get around to it the first time you ask. Don’t be afraid to send another round of emails to nudge people into action, or reposting your page link to Facebook a second time! Keeping your page updated with your team’s progress will give your friends a reason to keep clicking through!

  • Get your workplace involved! Matched Giving programs
Does your company have a ‘matched giving’ program? Many employers offer ‘match funding’ programs to encourage their staff to support charitable organisations such as The Fred Hollows Foundation. This is an easy way to instantly double your fundraising total! Check with your HR Manager or employer if you’re unsure. All direct donations over $2 are tax deductible!

  • Raise your target
Already reached your target? Keep going! Increase your personal and team target so that your supporters know you’re still actively fundraising. You’ll be surprised at how this can help you raise more funds. Why don’t you try going up in $500 increments every time you beat your target – your supporters will see that you still have a way to go and will want to help you reach your goal!

  • Community Fundraising
Thinking of organising a small community fundraiser to raise more dollars? It can be as simple as selling chocolates or holding a dinner party for friends.

Remember, any additional fundraising activities you conduct (other than online) first need to be approved by The Fred Hollows Foundation Fundraising team. Contact us at coastrek@hollows.org to find out more!

Thank you Volunteers! 30 to go!

Thank you to those wonderful Wild Women and their friends and family members who have volunteered to assist with Coastrek….but we need more!

We need at least 30 more volunteers to help us run Sydney Coastrek successfully.

This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever before.  There are a record 327 teams (or 1,308 people) registered to participate in Coastrek and it is critical that we run a safe and well organized event for them and for The Fred Hollows Foundation.

We will use an electronic system to record times this year, but we need volunteers to motivate the walkers, give out refreshments and encouragement, register teams and keep manual records. A buzz of excitement will be generated at the start, finishing lines and each staffed checkpoint. And we need volunteers to generate that buzz.

Margie, our Coastrek Volunteer Coordinator, is happy to split shifts, for volunteers who are only available for part of the time.  Shifts that need filling are: ...
