FRIENDS OF LANE INFO - Follow us on
Dear Friends of Lane Community,
Thank you, thank you for an amazing year! As summer break nears, we want to take a moment to express our deepest appreciation for your support. This year has truly be an incredible demonstration of your commitment to the legacy of Lane Tech High School.
From a fundraising perspective, we had our most successful year to date. We set out the year with a mission of safety to raise funds for lights in our parking lot. With your incredible generosity, we achieved this goal by the end of January! We are now proud to announce that we have raised enough money for a second project. Principal Tennison is currently evaluating building improvement needs and will work with us to select a 2nd and perhaps 3rd project to fund. We hope you will join us this coming Wednesday June 7th for our Year End Celebration and check presentation to the school at the Village Tap on Roscoe at 7:00 pm. Appetizers will be served and there will be a cash bar. We will also take this opportunity to bid farewell and say thank you to Maureen George for all of her years of service to Lane and Friends of Lane. Cost is $10 at the door includes all you can eat appetizers and a cash bar.
Our accomplishments don't stop there, however. With the help of Debi Lilly and A Perfect Event together with her tireless Gala Committee, our Green and Gold Gala raised double the revenue, increased attendance by over 100 people and reduced our costs by 75% so more of the money raised will go directly to the school. We have a very long list of sponsors who are all noted on our FriendsofLane.org website. Please thank them with your support and mention Lane Tech when you visit them. It goes a very long way toward gaining their participation again next year.
For our teachers and staff, we funded individual teacher grant requests, hosted a beautiful holiday staff appreciation luncheon and served up desserts and ice cream on Teacher Appreciation Day last month.
To welcome new parents, we organized a Parent Meet and Greet in May and assisted Tara Johnson with her welcome party in August. We increased our presence at the newly admitted freshman welcome nights to answer questions and help dispel worries of incoming families. Our school store provided new Lane Gear for students, staff and alumni. We are proud to say this is the most successful, volunteer run, spirit wear store among Chicago Public Schools! All money raised from the store goes directly toward the projects we are funding for the school.
Our monthly community meetings covered useful topics like "A Cliff Notes Guide to Lane", Programming for next year, The State of Lane by Principal Tennison, and College Planning. We enjoyed getting to know each other through social events like "9th Period" after curriculum night and the Commonwealth All-Star Teacher Bartender night. You also supported us by volunteering to help at important events like Quick Start, Curriculum Night and Report Card Pick Up.
As the Friends of Lane Community, we are making a tremendous difference in the lives of our children, parents, teachers, staff and administration. We could not have done all this without the support of our incredible Principal Brian Tennison, the team of Assistant Principals and the Local School Council. We work seamlessly as a collaborative team and are so grateful for this. It is clear you, as parents, value the importance of our community and are committed to the continued success of Lane Tech. On behalf of the Friends of Lane Board, we pledge our continued commitment to serving Lane Tech. We are truly a School of Champions and sincerely thank you for your contributions to our collective success.
President, Friends of Lane

Lane Student To Travel to China on Scholarship
Ben Laughlin, a junior at Lane, was selected to receive a full ride scholarship with NSLI-Y through the American Councils for International Education. NSLI-Y stands for National Security Language Initiative for Youth. It's a merit-based full scholarship from the US State Department that sends American high school students abroad for a summer or year for intensive language study. Ben will be traveling to Nanjing, China with 20 students from across the U.S. for 6 weeks. He will be living with a host family and studying Mandarin at Nanjing University. This will be his second summer traveling to China on scholarship.
Last summer Ben was selected to receive a scholarship to participate in the 2016 Chicago Public Schools Chinese Summer Language, Culture and Technology Initiative (CSLCTI) in Hangzhou, China from June 26 – July 24, 2016. This scholarship was made possible through the generous donation of Wanxiang America Corporation in Chicago and Wanxiang Group in Hangzhou, China. He was one of 24 students in Chicago Public Schools who received this honor.

Reunion Brings Together Some of Lane’s First Female Students
Girls first started attending Lane in the 1971-72 school year. "Women stuck out like a sore thumb. When you walked into a class, I'd look around to see, 'Are there any other girls?'" recalled Barbara Korus, class of 1976...Members of the Lane Tech classes of '75, '76 and '77 attended the informal reunion, organized by Michelle Weiner ('76) and held at O'Donovan's, 2100 W. Irving Park Rd. (The class of 1974, the first to graduate females, was unfortunately not represented.)

New Band Lockers!
The old band lockers, that had been there since 1973, have been removed and will be replaced with brand new ones with funds that were raised by the band students. The new lockers will go against the wall freeing up the entire center area for small group and chamber rehearsals. So exciting - they were desperately needed!
Photos show where old lockers were removed - in preparation for new band lockers.
Display pedestals needed! The art department is in need of pedestals to display the excellent 3D work of our students. We are currently using tables which do not allow the viewer the full experience when appreciating the work of art. Does anyone know of a company that would be willing to donate pedestals? Maybe someone is handy and pedestals can be made? Any help would be greatly appreciated by all. Thank you! Please contact Marjorrie Custodio for information firstname.lastname@example.org
