In Haiti: Partners join forces to give youth hope through sports

The Government of Haiti, in partnership with the IDB, the Atlético de Madrid Foundation, and the Haitian Olympic Committee launched an innovative sports for development project in Carrefour last month, to get children out of the streets and equip them with the tools for a more sustainable future. Read more.

The Nature Conservancy is revolutionizing the approach to water as a valuable good by launching water funds across Latin America that pay for watershed protection and reforestation — thereby helping to provide fresh water today and into the future. Read more.
 
SABMiller and IDB's MIF: Partnering to support 40,000 retailers in Latin America
In collaboration with the IDB’s MIF, SABMiller Latin America announced an investment of $17million over four years in the “4e, Camino al Progreso” program to improve the lives of 40,000 “tenderos” across the region. Karl Lippert, President of SABMiller Latin America, said: “Human development and growth in prosperity are our strongest interest here. Read more.
 
Working Towards Mesoamerican Integration in Panama
At the 1st Business Forum of Mesoamerica, over 250 of the region’s top business leaders joined President Ricardo Martinelli of Panama, and IDB President Luis A. Moreno to discuss the role of the private sector in the region’s trade integration. President Moreno urged: “Let’s work together with urgency and commitment to transform Mesoamerica into an integrated region.” Read more.
 
CSR Innolabs & IDB: New digital guide for inclusive business
Launched in March 2012 with Partners CEMEX, Citi, Gas Natural Fenosa, Microsoft, PepsiCo and SABMiller, the IDB's CSR Innolabs forum has come to its first set of conclusions, publishing a digital guide that shows latest trends, tips and successful initiatives in inclusive business at the base of the pyramid. Tec de Monterrey, FEMSA, and Arizona State University and IDB launch “Water Innovation Consortium”
Key partners collaborate to support decision makers and community stakeholders in utilizing existing and future water resources effectively and sustainably, addressing the prevention of future flooding, optimal water sustainability and planning in the wake of Hurricane Alex and the severe flood which damaged the center of Monterrey in 2010. Over 1500 business leaders, members of government, academics, impact investors, venture philanthropists, IDB staff, and media convened at the BOP to discuss the policy environment needed to unleash the private sector potential to scale BOP models. Global Philanthropy Forum: LAC featured as an example for innovative partnerships
At this year’s GPF, the IDB’s Office of Outreach and Partnerships, joined partners Endeavor Global, MasterCard Worldwide and Vox Capital (Impact Investor from Brazil) in a plenary to emphasize the increasingly important role of the private sector in providing innovative solutions to development in LAC. Read more.

GBC Health Annual Meeting: Featuring the LAC region for the first time
At the GBC Health Annual Meeting, the IDB and partners PAHO and Booz & Company represented the LAC region in the first-ever session on LAC at the GBC Health. In addition, the IDB supported GBC Health and Booz&Co's ongoing survey to identify and access corporate engagement on health in the LAC region. Read more.

ALAS Competition: Calling for Partners to invest in Early Childhood Development (ECD)
Shakira and IDB President Moreno invite nominations for the 2nd edition of the ALAS-IDB Awards for early childhood development. The singer Shakira, well known for her activism on early childhood, has joined forces with the IDB to promote high-quality early childhood development. Get involved now.

IDB Seeking Nominations for Juscelino Kubitschek Award

STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIPS WITH EUROPE

OECD, Ministry of Finance of France and IDB launch International Economic Forum on LAC
At the Forum, Luis A. Moreno, President of the IDB, addressed the significant progress made by the LAC region, stating: "The exceptional momentum gained by these economies and the will to implement better public policies ensure continued support to the region’s inclusive economic growth." European Union and IDB deepen their cooperation
The EU and the IDB have signed an MOU to jointly tackle some of LAC’s key challenges, with a particular focus on citizen security, renewable energy, environment and climate change, trade and private sector development, and public financial and fiscal management. Read more.

The European Union launches €40 million Caribbean Investment Facility (CIF)
The CIF is an innovative financing mechanism established by the EU to close funding gaps by blending and leveraging EU grant resources with the lending capacity of finance institutions and private sector capital. IDB was strongly featured in the CIF launching, represented by a high-level delegation, and is one of the key partners that will be working with this Facility based on its experience with the Latin American Investment Facility (LAIF). IDB and Norway reaffirm transparency partnership for Latin America and the Caribbean
The Norwegian government, a long-time IDB partner, made an additional contribution to the IDB’s Transparency Trust Fund (TTF), bringing its total contribution to $7.4 million for the 2013-2015 period, to promote innovative transparency initiatives in LAC. Watch the transparency video.  

New Partnership: ILO and IDB collaborate to stimulate more and better jobs in LAC
The ILO and IDB committed to work together on key development issues in LAC, including job creation and the formalization of the informal economy; financial services, social protection floors and social security; youth employment and better working conditions for young people. Read more.

Austria and the IDB: Continue Strengthening Ties
The Federal Ministry of Finance of Austria continues its support to the IDB’s Sustainable Emerging Cities Multidonor Trust Fund with a contribution of USD$1million to help growing intermediate cities make more informed planning decisions and take immediate actions towards sustainable urban development. 

The IDB’s Office in Europe partnered with the Austrian Chamber of Commerce in hosting a delegation of Austrian businesspeople in Madrid, to highlight the IDB’s activities and priorities in LAC. Read more. 

Gender Equality discussed in Madrid: IDB's EVP highlights IDB's line of action
At a meeting organized by Inforpress in Madrid, IDB Executive Vice President Julie T. Katzman shared her reflections to achieve gender equality in the region, and recognized the IDB’s efforts to promote the integration of women into the process of human capital development. Read more.

The IDB’s Office of Outreach and partnerships, highlights the strategic partnership between IDB and Spain as a gateway in Europe and Latin America, in IE’s 2013 Panorama on Spanish Investments on LAC. Read more. 
 
STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIPS WITH ASIA

With nearly 1,300 participants and 26 countries represented, IDB’s Vice President for Countries, Roberto Vellutini delivered the key note speech and met with the Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Chen Jian and Vice Chairman Chi Changhai of the China International Contractors Association. Japan’s Increasing Commitment to LAC
The IDB's Office in Asia hosted seminar “Brazilian Economy-Perspective on Economic Growth”, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA), the Japan Institute for Overseas Investment (JOI) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation(JBIC) demonstrating a growing interest for LAC in general and Brazil in particular among the Japanese business community.

Mexico's new President visits Japan
In partnership with the United Nations University (UNU) and the Science Council of Japan, the IDB co-organized a special lecture by President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico at UNU in Tokyo: “Mexico in the World: An Actor with Global Responsibility” where President Pena Nieto stressed the relevance of Japan for his country and welcomed Japan’s decision to become an observer of the Pacific Alliance Initiative. IDB’s FONTAGRO and China collaborate to improve agricultural science and technology 
Partnering with CAAS moves us toward improving agricultural production, productivity and as a result, the overall food security in LAC,” noted Roberto Vellutini, IDB’s Vice President for Countries. The meeting coincided with the 1st meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of LAC with China, in Beijing. Read more.

Paraguay Business Seminar in Japan
In partnership with the Paraguayan Embassy in Japan, IDB hosted Vice President of Paraguay Juan Afara, Diego Zavala (Minister of Trade and Industry), Adán Godoy (Minister of Agriculture), Ramon Zarza (Vice minister of Finance) and Roland Holst (Board Member of the Central Bank) to highlight all aspects of the current situation of the economy in Paraguay and future perspectives.

Working sessions with GRULAC Ambassadors in Tokyo, Japan
The IDB’s Office in Asia organized working meeting with GRULAC ambassadors in Japan and Korea with the objective to further strengthen the relationships with this important group of LAC diplomatic representations in Asia.

Global Forum on Remittances 2013 in Bangkok features IDB’s MIF 
Recognizing the important role and track record of the IDB’s MIF in tackling the issue of remittances, the IDB was invited to participate in the main panel of the Forum, held jointly by the World Bank and IFAD in Bangkok on May 20-23. Read more.

Seminar on Market Entry Strategy and Business Matching for Korean SMEs in Seoul 
The IDB and the IIC, in cooperation with the Korean International Trade Association, organized jointly a seminar where more than 50 Korean SME's and 12 Korean companies demonstrated interest in the Business Matching session which focused on the games, software and environmental industries.

Asia-Pacific Forum on Financial Inclusion 
Held by ABAC and the Ministry of Finance of Indonesia, the IDB Office in Asia represented the Bank in the Forum that was designed to help promote best practice proposals for policy, regulatory and supervisory agencies to continuously promote financial inclusion in the region’s banking and securities systems.
