Fundraiser for Zonta

In the month of February, NEVER a Victim, a Self-Defense and Awareness program founded by Zonta Member, Doris Rivera-Black, held a fundraising event for Zonta Pikes Peak.  As a result of the fundraiser, NEVER a Victim presented Zonta Pikes Peak with a check for $132.  NEVER a Victim donates 20% of proceeds to a different women's organization each month. On February 20, 2012, Doris Rivera-Black also gave a presentation to Zonta Pikes Peak on "How to defend yourselves with your head as well as your hands."

Zonta Participates in the Regional Science Fair:
The Pikes Peak Regional Science Fair was held March 10 at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. The Zonta Club of the Pikes Peak Area was proudly represented by members Dee Nelson and Laura Stamp as judges.
Zonta Awards: One $50 award for Senior High Division
One $50 award for Junior High Division
“to encourage youth to explore topics in math and science which improve the health and/or economic self-sufficiency of women and girls.”
2012 Recipients:
Sara Volz, 11th grade, Cheyenne Mountain HS, “Optimizing Algae Biofuels: Artificial Selection and Nitrogen Stress as Methods to Induce Lipid Synthesis”
Sara’s project was a more specific extension of a project she began in junior high school, and has expanded each year up to today. She is developing methods for increasing the lipid content in algae cells in order to use those lipids as the basis of a bio-fuel to eventually replace fossil fuels in many applications. This project has “Real-World” relevance in that the ultimate result would improve the environment, make efficient use of non-viable soil environments and decrease dependence on finite fossil fuels.
Alison Henry, 7th grade, The Classical Academy, “This is Your Bean; This is Your Bean on Drugs”
Alison’s project was a study of the effects of pharmaceuticals on plants and thereby making inferences about those effects on humans. Her study was motivated by her concern about the findings of pharmaceutical chemicals in drinking water and in greater concentrations in non-potable water which is used to irrigate plants. This project has “Real-World” relevance in that it directly relates to the health of all people and especially women in their reproductive years.
