Congratulations to our Competition Winner
February 26th saw the inauguration of our 2015 Concerts at the Cervantes series following on from a hugely successful launch last Autumn, with the oboe-guitar Oatridge-Brown Duo. Attendees were entered into a competition draw to win a copy of Ahmed Dickinson's Havana Suite and we are delighted to announce the winner: congratulations Diana Zuik!

The series continues in April with a performance by Ahmed Dickinson in duo with British guitarist Helen Sanderson. Tickets are now on sale - join us at the Cervantes' beautifully-renovated Auditorium to bask in the warm and colourful classical music of Spain and Latin America (and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine!). Professor Robert Adlington, University of Nottingham: ' The Strange Familiarity of Ravel's Bolero

7.30pm CONCERT

The powerhouse rhythms of Ginastera's 1941 ballet, Estancia, launch this Latin-spirited concert, continuing with Lalo's atmospheric Symphonie espagnole, inspired by the virtuoso violinist Pablo de Sarasate and the composer's own partly-Spanish origins. Bizet's opera Carmen initially offended Parisian audiences but its seductive melodies ultimately won the day, as you can hear in Juanjo Mena's selection from the 1st and 2nd Suites for orchestra. In Ravel's immortal Bolérothere are just two tunes, obsessively repeated over an unstoppable crescendo, but the composer's matchless orchestration weaves a powerful spell, all the way to its ecstatic conclusion.
