Cervantes' Smiles

Ignacio Cervantes

Cervantes has just had dinner at home with his family. While his wife helps clear the table, he snuggles into a rocking chair on the balcony, where every night a nice breeze ambles by. He lights a Partagás cigarette and distractedly browses through an edition of La Habana Elegante. After a while the maid brings him a cup of coffee... READ MORE

Baroque and Roll

A slow beat on percussion, almost a lament, opens the album Vidala, ushering in the plaintive sounds of the tune La Folia, as Vivaldi’s famous variations are lifted from the grey Venician lagoon to the vibrant air of South America. This album, subtitled Argentine Roots of European Baroque is the brainchild of Argentine-born Rubén Dubrovsky, who explores the cultural exchange of musical forms that developed in what was New Spain, and returned to Europe, transformed. Clara Rodríguez & Friends: 'Histoires D'Amour'

Mon 3 December 2018, 7.45pm
Southbank Centre's Purcell Room at Queen Elizabeth Hall
Belvedere Road
United Kingdom

(Not an ILAMS concert, but one we highly recommend!)

Love, longing and friendship in an evening of classical music performed by pianist Clara Rodríguez and literary readings. Rodríguez brings her eloquent style to a moving programme that includes works by Debussy, Ravel, Hahn and Piazzolla. The music is interspersed by readings of Proust's letters to Hahn and poems by Verlaine and Bertrand. Corentin Chassard joins Clara Rodríguez for Debussy’s Sonata in D minor for cello and piano, dedicated to the lives lost during World War One. Marcel Proust said, ‘Everything I have ever done has always been thanks to Reynaldo’. In this concert, Rodríguez introduces music by the Venezuelan-born Reynaldo Hahn, with whom the French writer had an intense and lasting friendship. Caribbean bolero Historia de un amor by Carlos Almarán closes the concert.
