As we look towards November we see the close of the first-ever UK Mes Amigo ('Amigo Month'), a new initiative launched by the Iberian American Alliance to celebrate Luso-Hispanic culture in Great Britain. ILAMS is proud to have taken part in the festivities with a concert at St Martin-in-the-Fields given by soprano Jennifer Glidden, 2012 winner of the Trujillo International Song Competition of Peru. The Iberian American Alliance campaigns tirelessly for the rights of Latinos living in the UK. To find out more about the Mes Amigo and the work of the IAA visit www.mesamigo.com.

October also saw the launch of a new series of ILAMS events in collaboration with Rudolf Steiner House in London. The series opened with a vibrant evening of Peruvian music performed by Malambo (pictured above) and continues this November with 'The Ultimate Tango Concert': a night of sumptuous classical tango featuring soprano-piano duo, TangOpera, and A Piacere Trio on Wednesday 13th Nov. See below for more details.

As ever, please keep your contributions coming to selahperez@ilams.org.uk and don't forget you can also follow us on Twitter and Facebook! Links at the top of this page.

Mostly Villa-Lobos: 20th-Century Piano Music from the Americas
Sergio Gallo, piano

Eroica JDT3425
By RAY PICOT

This is one of the most interesting and eclectic piano discs that I’ve heard for some time. 19 tracks of music, including the challenging Rudepoema by Villa-Lobos, Sergio Gallo takes us on a real voyage of discovery, lit by a keen musical imagination and amazing technique. Much of the music is lighter, i.e., Nazareth, Lima, Netto and Cervantes, but it is never treated trivially and always the dance rhythms are well sprung. Somehow mixing the more salon-orientated music with stronger musical fare succeeds, as a disc of sweetmeats could be too much for the palette! Guarnieri’s Toccata is a brilliant reminder of the composer’s characteristic writing for the piano, contrasted by two pieces by Henry Cowell who, like Cage, expanded what could be expressed with the piano. Another... READ MORE

Maria Camahort

(Not an ILAMS concert, but one we highly recommend!)

Maria Camahort, together with four other brilliant musicians, presents a concert of music by Spanish composers with a very original approach, sharing with the audience the vivid colours, earthy textures and rhythms of Spanish musical art. The Maria Camahort Quintet was created with the aim of creating new possibilities in the field of chamber music. The originality of the ensemble comes from the intense collaboration between musicians from different musical traditions, its characteristic timbre, and by the specific choice of classical repertoire and their adaptation to this particular quintet. These features give great charisma and personality to this unique ensemble.
