WATER COURSE 2/11, 18 & 25!
Our annual Water Course will be held at CMU this year and will feature Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hobbs, as well as an impressive slate of other water experts.  Topics include water law, cooperative initiatives on salinity control and riparian restoration, and current policy issues.  Sponsorships are welcome! Details here.


NEW WATER RULES FOR GAS DEV
The Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) recently approved new water monitoring requirements for oil and gas development. Industry says they are too cumbersome, and environmental advocates say they are too weak.  COGCC press release, rules here; Colorado Oil and Gas Association statement here; Environmental Defense Fund statement here.  

CO LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS
State legislative proposals under discussion in Denver include SB 13-019, a law to ensure that farmers' water rights aren't put at risk if they enact conservation measures, and a proposal to allow more widespread use of graywater. Thanks to the Coyote Gulch blog for legislative coverage & links. 

DROUGHT CONTINUES

According to the US Drought Monitor, drought conditions in Colorado continue to range from moderate to exceptional, despite recent storms.  Nationally, extreme drought persists in much of the midwest, and the 3-month forecast is grim. Jan 10 SNOTEL graphs show the Colorado Basin snowpack (in CO) at 60% of average for that date, and the Gunnison Basin snowpack at 62%.

The US Fish & Wildlife Service is hiring a Small Craft Operators in Grand Junction, CO and Vernal, UT. Closes 1/18/13.

BIO SCIENCE TECH IN GJ
USFWS is also seeking applicants for a  Biological Science Technician position in their Grand Junction office.

RIVER DISTRICT GRANT PROGRAM
The Colorado River District is accepting grant applications for projects to protect, enhance or develop water resources within the Colorado River Basin in Colorado.  Deadline 1/31/13.  

ALTERNATIVE AG TRANSFER GRANTS
The Colorado Water Conservation Board is seeking proposals for projects that would increase understanding of how to successfully design non-permanent transfers of water from farms that provide a long-term, reliable water supply while sustaining meaningful agricultural production.  Deadline 4/15/13.
