WINDY GAP FIRMING APPROVED
The US Army Corps of Engineers has issued the final federal permit required for the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District to construct a reservoir that will allow it to divert more water from the Colorado River at the existing Windy Gap diversion dam. This blog post from Coyote Gulch includes summaries and links for project information and news coverage.
ALTERNATIVE AG TRANS REPORT
The Colorado Water Institute has released a special report on how to advance in Colorado with Alternative Transfer Methods (ATMs), which move water from agriculture to other uses without permanently drying up farmland. The recommendations include establishing separate working groups for ATM's to provide water for urban use and ATM's to facilitate Colorado River Compact compliance.
LOWER GUNNI FLOW TARGETS
According to this May 17 update from the Bureau of Reclamation, the May 15 forecast runoff into Blue Mesa Reservoir is down slightly, from 850,000 acre feet forecast on May 1 to 825,000 acre-feet. This is still 122% of the 30-year average but moves the water year classification from "Moderately Wet" to "Average Wet" and reduces flow targets to benefit endangered fish. The new peak flow target for the Gunnison at Whitewater is 14,040 cubic feet/ second (cfs) for two days, with halfbank full flows of 8,070 for 20 days. The schedule for releases and projected flows below the Gunnison Tunnel are in the update.
