Did You Know?

Cool Down from the Hot Days of Summer:  An easy way to cool your body down on a hot summer day is to dab a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol and a drop or two of pure peppermint essential oil. Then rub on neck and wrists.

Bugs Be Gone: Forget expensive bug zappers and pesticides. Hang a fabric softener sheet adjacent to (but not touching) outdoor light fixtures to keep flying insects (like mosquitoes and moths) away. They hate the scent generated when the softener sheets are heated, yet you can enjoy their soft gentle fragrance.

Get Rid of Weeds: Most weeds can be destroyed with an inexpensive and eco- friendly spray made from one gallon of white distilled vinegar mixed with one ounce of liquid dish soap. Spray this on the weeds and watch them shrivel up.

Plant-Based Bug Repellant: Combine three tablespoons of distilled vinegar, ½ cup of baking soda, and three tablespoons of liquid dishwashing soap (Dove preferred).   Mix it all together in a spray container and spray on the plants. You’ll be amazed and the plants will love you.

Sunburns:  Oops, you were out in the sun too long.  Ease the burn with lavender spray. It’s a perfect antiseptic, cooling herb.  Fill an 8-ounce spray bottle with cold water and add 6 drops of essential oil of lavender. Shake well, and spray on the sunburn for soothing relief.

In our next Did You Know? column I will talk about the healing benefits of laughter, plus more.  Remember to take some quiet time everyday to pause, breathe, and focus on beautiful thoughts. Until next time…

Ever since taking this training, many doors have opened up for me both professionally and personally.  I originally thought I’d just take only one 60-hour training through the Motivational Institute of Hypnotherapy, but I soon realized I was on an incredible path of change and I needed to continue.  I’ve obtained some valuable tools that have helped me in my personal life and have propelled the success of my coaching practice. The instructors are superb, and they have a wide range of expertise.  Marla herself is amazing; she is a great teacher and has been a wonderful mentor to me.

Letter from the Executive Director

Hi Everyone,

“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.”  - Winston Churchill

Two world renowned artists, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and his fellow colleague Henri Matisse, 28 years his junior, were dear friends and frequent companions.

Renoir, in his later years, was confined to his home during the last decade of his life. He was crippled with rheumatoid arthritis which required him to change his painting technique, as the brush had to be strapped to his paralyzed fingers.

Matisse, who visited him daily, watched the elder painter one day working in his studio fighting torturous pain with each brush stroke. He blurted out, “Auguste, why do you continue to paint when you’re in such agony?”

Renoir answered simply, “The beauty remains; the pain passes.” And so, almost to his dying day, Renoir continued to put paint to canvas.  One of his most famous paintings, The Bathers, was completed just two years before his passing, 14 years after he was stricken by this disabling disease.

It’s important for us to remember that age and aging are two different things: age is body and aging is lifestyle.

How are you making a difference in your life or the lives of others?

To Your Success,

Did Kate Middleton Use Hypnosis for Childbirth?

It was widely reported that Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, used a technique called ‘HypnoBirthing’ to ease labor while delivering her new son. The news, whether or not it is true, shines a light on a slightly misunderstood yet brilliant natural supportive addition to the birthing experience.

Hypnosis for childbirth, or HypnoBirthing, does not involve “going under” or being unaware of what’s going on. Rather, it helps with anxieties and impending fear of the experience of pain that oftentimes accompanies labor.

So what exactly does hypnosis for childbirth consist of? It involves a breathing technique, relaxation, visualization, and guided imagery. The most important part is to teach the mother how to relax with each contraction thus releasing any fear, tension, and anxiety associated with the birthing process.

Our society recognizes childbirth as being painful. Every birthing film shows someone screaming and writhing around in agony. If you’re in a state of fear, the body produces stress hormones. Yet what you want to produce are endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain relief that help the mother remain calm and relaxed.

Hypnosis for childbirth helps speed up labor and delivery in addition to speeding up the recovery process for the mother. The newborn also experiences a more peaceful birth. These techniques aren’t necessarily meant to replace the need for epidurals or pain relief, but the brilliance of it is that it can be used in addition to all the other care provided by the hospital.

Marie Mongan, the founder of HypnoBirthing said, "Babies don’t need to come into the world in pain, and their mothers don’t need to suffer as they do.”  That was the starting point for her method which relies on deep relaxation and powerful affirmations to promise not a pain-free delivery, but an easier one. It works by shutting down the fight-or-flight response of the sympathetic side of the autonomic nervous system. If a woman heads into labor in fear, her muscles tense up blocking needed blood flow to the birthing muscles. As the baby moves along the birth canal, that tightness creates pain which begets fear, and the cycle continues.

Through hypnosis for childbirth, many babies don't even cry when they come into the world because they haven't experienced birth trauma, and they are more content as a result of the HypnoBirthing process.

Actress Jessica Alba is a fan as she used hypnotherapy when delivering daughter, Honor.

The Motivational Institute of Hypnotherapy will be offering Hypnosis for Childbirth classes in November 2013.  We’ll keep you posted.
