Suite of analysis equips cities with tools to improve traffic safety

Cities across the globe now have more resources at their disposal to improve traffic safety and reduce crashes and fatalities. EMBARQ recently launched two publications that highlight the positive impact that sustainable transport - mass transport, bicycling, and walking - can have on traffic safety, in addition to numerous other co-benefits. The recent releases of the issue brief, "Saving Lives with Sustainable Transport," and the report, "Social, Environmental and Economic Impacts of Bus Rapid Transit," underscore EMBARQ's pioneering role in research and analysis on the potential of sustainable transport to improve quality of life in cities. EMBARQ Brazil strengthens partnership with city of São José dos Campos

EMBARQ Brazil solidified its partnership with São José dos Campos, the seventh largest city in the state of São Paulo, by hosting an urban mobility plan workshop and signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Mayor Carlinhos Almeida in December 2013. These efforts were made as part of EMBARQ Brazil's "From PAC to Plan" initiative, which supports medium-sized cities across Brazil as they leverage funding to develop sustainable urban mobility plans from the country's Growth Acceleration Program (Programa de Aceleração de Crescimento [PAC]). World Resources Institute and EMBARQ China align with Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport

The World Resources Institute (WRI) and EMBARQ China are now professionally affiliated with the key government agency accountable for mitigating emissions from the transport sector in Beijing. A recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing with the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport (BMCT) marked a milestone development in EMBARQ China's strategic partnerships with cities in China, the world’s most populous country, where 53% of the population lives in urban areas. By signing a MoU with BMCT, WRI and EMBARQ China have committed to providing support on the road to achieving sustainable and low-carbon development in Beijing's urban transport sector. (read more)

Raahgiri Day promotes people-friendly streets in Gurgaon, India

In seven short weeks, Sundays in Gurgaon, India, have become ubiquitously associated with Raahgiri Day, a non-motorized community event that closes 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) of city streets to vehicles and opens them to people. EMBARQ India was involved from the beginning stages of conceptualizing and planning Raahgiri Day, which has become a groundbreaking event in India, raising awareness about the benefits of non-motorized transport and setting a precedent for other Indian cities to follow. Connected Cities brings transit-oriented development principles to eight Mexican cities

EMBARQ Mexico partnered with the National Workers Housing Fund Institute (Instituto del Fondo Nacional de la Vivienda para los Trabajadores - INFONAVIT) to host “Connected Cities: Sustainable Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) through reform of the regulatory framework,” a workshop held in Mexico City. The workshop catered to decision-makers responsible for regulating and promoting urban development at the local level in eight Mexican cities, helping provide the tools to build institutional support towards a more sustainable model of urban development. EMBARQ Turkey awarded for BikeLab Istanbul

EMBARQ Turkey was awarded the "Public Transportation and Public Health Award" from the Turkish Public Health Association in December. The recognition for EMBARQ Turkey's BikeLab Istanbul project underscores the noteworthy impacts the center catalyzes on the ground in terms of sustainable and non-motorized transport, traffic safety, and urban accessibility. BikeLab Istanbul launched one year earlier and has since expanded to five additional Turkish cities. The project works with local governments to expand cycling infrastructure and improve bike safety.
