Thinking about transport finance nationally and locally

Vision Three Zeros ‐ Zero Congestion, Zero Pollution, and Zero Accidents

Last month, EMBARQ Global Director Holger Dalkmann and EMBARQ India Director Madhav Pai participated in the United Nations 7th Regional Environmentally Sustainable Transport Forum in Asia. Dalkmann presented on the role that national governments can play, in conjunction with multilateral development banks, in realizing the shift to sustainable transport. One key outcome of the Forum was the adoption of the “Bali Declaration on Vision Three Zeros ‐ Zero Congestion, Zero Pollution, and Zero Accidents towards Next Generation Transport Systems in Asia.” The declaration established a policy of zero tolerance for unsustainable transport.  (read more)

Forum on integrated transport in Lima

Integrated Transportation Systems Forum cultivates knowledge sharing in Lima

Transport professionals and representatives from Latin America convened May 2–3 in Lima, Peru, for the Integrated Transport Systems Forum in Latin America, organized by the Transitemos Foundation. Participants shared experiences in the areas of integrated transport management, grants, operation and collection systems, and involvement from local and national authorities.  (read more)

Brazil Meeting of Municipalities for Sustainable Development

Mobility core to the Brazil Meeting of Municipalities for Sustainable Development

The Second Meeting of Brazilian Municipalities for Sustainable Development, held in Brasilia April 23-25, focused on transport and mobility. The event brought together mayors and municipal officials from throughout Brazil to discuss ways to collaborate and share knowledge on sustainability at city-level. Luis Antonio Lindau, Director of EMBARQ Brasil, discussed sustainable transport alternatives, during the "Networks and Modal Integration" panel. Sixty attendees joined the round of discussions where consensus emerged to prioritize sustainable transportation initiatives, especially buses and bus rapid transit (BRT).  (read more)

First annual CONNECTKaro conference in Mumbai

First annual CONNECTKaro conference on sustainable transport and urban development held in Mumbai

EMBARQ India held its first annual CONNECTKaro conference April 15-16, in Mumbai. The theme was two-fold: first, to “CONNECT” sustainable urban transport to urban development, and second, “Karo,” a Hindi word meaning to “do it” — to make it happen. The conference was a major success, with over 220 attendees representing public transport, the public and private sector, the media, and academia. Additionally, more than 2,100 people watched CONNECTKaro via live webcast.  (read more)

Climate in Mexico National Development Plan

4 propositions for the 2013–2018 Mexican National Development Plan (PND)

As a member of Mexico’s Group on Climate Change Financing, EMBARQ Mexico has developed a set of proposals to help develop sustainable federal public policies. The proposals insist on the integration of the Avoid-Shift-Improve approach across the various axes of the Plan. The 4 specific proposals also target government coordination, housing policies, and integrated urban transport finance.  (read more)

Decade of Action for Road Safety in Turkey

Turkish prime minister launches Decade of Action for Road Safety in Turkey

Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan officially launched the country’s national program for the Decade of Action for Road Safety. EMBARQ Turkey Director Arzu Tekir attended the launch event on April 3, representing EMBARQ and its commitment to road safety in Turkey. The program will work in collaboration with Turkey's own Road Safety Platform to cut the number of traffic-related fatalities on Turkey's roads by half and to stress the importance of traffic law enforcement and driver behavior modification.  (read more)
