EMBARQ to host "Cities Safer by Design for All" event at UN-HABITAT World Urban Forum
The EMBARQ Network is set to host a "Cities Safer by Design for All" networking event at the seventh annual UN-HABITAT World Urban Forum (WUF7), which will be held in Medellín, Colombia from April 5 - 11, 2014. The event will focus on the potential of urban design to make cities safer and more inclusive for all citizens. With traffic fatalities currently claiming over 1.2 million deaths annually – 91% of which occur in low-income and middle-income countries – EMBARQ's work in cities in emerging economies has never been more critical. Thus, the event will share best practices, principles, and key research that can help transform cities and transport options by focusing on the needs of people instead of vehicles. (read more)

Brazilian cities seek new paths with Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans
To combat a growing motorization trend in Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff has announced over R$ 50 billion (US$ 21 billion) in federal resources to add to the R$ 110 billion (US$ 46 billion) already in place for the Programa de Açeleração de Crescimento (Growth Acceleration Program [PAC]) to help cities find sustainable urban mobility solutions. To aid cities in this effort, EMBARQ Brazil initiated the "From PAC to Plan" program to help cities move from general policies to detailed implementation guidelines. EMBARQ Brazil recently held events in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul and Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais to build capacity for city officials and support urban mobility planning. (read more)

Air pollution in China forces short-term responses, requires long-term solutions
Average particulate matter readings in the Beijing area hit 473 milligrams per cubic meter last month, 19 times the level deemed healthy by the World Health Organization (WHO). Unprecedented smog has prompted multiple cities to enforce short-term emergency tactics such as banning construction and limiting car usage. Cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangzhou have also come together to created individual five year Clean Air Action Plans that introduce economic and systemic approaches to reducing air pollutant emissions. Transport, as the top emitter of particulate matter in China, is a pivotal component in these new policies and has the potential to cut emissions while advancing compromising economic growth. Towards a sustainable legal framework for Mexico
As Mexico prepares to pass Energy Reform legislation, EMBARQ Mexico has contributed to the secondary laws (or delegated legislation) that will influence how large-scale policies are implemented. To this end, EMBARQ Mexico and partners have discussed the sustainability, health, and human rights issues that the new legislation will impact and found that there are necessary measures to take to ensure the successful implementation of the Energy Reform bill. Such measures include funding for sustainability efforts with wider social benefits, coordination between all levels of government and between public and private sectors, and the creation of evaluation and monitoring measures for energy projects that include both environmental and social externalities and benefits.
