April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer of the esophagus is on the rise. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the main risk factor. Reflux is very common and can affect up to 40% of the population. Many people have it without the typical symtom of heartburn. Barretts esophagus is a result of reflux that is the precursor for esophageal cancer. This is more common in white men over the age of 50 but can occur in women as well. There is a new outpatient endoscopic  technique out called 'radiofrequency ablation'  that may be able to get rid of Barretts esophagus . If you have  had  any of the following symptoms for 3 years or longer and you are over 50 years old, it may be worth getting screened for Barretts esophagus: heartburn, unexplained coughing, new onset asthma, recurrent sinus infections, more dental carries and constant clearing of the throat, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease and a call to your doctor may be warranted.
