'Experimental Modelling of Air Turbines'

Organised by WavEC Offshore Renewables

MARINET is providing training and education in the operations of marine renewable energy infrastructures, thus being an enabling tool for growth in the sector. The short training courses are primarily intended for early-stage researchers but are open to all interested applicants from companies, research groups, educational institutions etc. There is no course fee to attend this course. Costs are covered by EC funding.

MARINET is also providing travel and subsistence (T&S) contributions up to €500 to support early-stage researchers in attending these courses. The T&S support contribution can be applied for via the registration form.

'Environmental Modelling of Air Turbines'
- course outline

Day 1 – Prof. Luís Gato & Prof. António Falcão will host lectures on the following topics
  • Basic Equations
  • Two-dimensional cascade flow analysis of axial-flow turbines 
  • Wells turbines
  • Self-rectifying impulse turbine
  • Wells turbine versus impulse turbine
  • Three-dimensional flow analysis of axial-flow turbines
  • Model testing of air turbines
  • Wells turbine performance
  • Performance of self-rectifying axial-flow impulse turbine
  • Other air turbines for bi-directional flows
  • Air turbine prototypes
  • Turbine integration into OWC plant
Day 2 - Tutorials & Lab classes
  • Prof. Luís Gato will demonstrate model testing of the biradial turbine

Day 3 – Pico OWC Wave Power Plant: Lessons learned with Dr Miguel Lopez
  • Pico Plant description
  • Operation & Maintenance at the Pico Plant
  • Performance Monitoring
  • Exercises with real data from the plant
