Albertus Horsting :I became a Mellon Mays fellow at the University of Chicago in 2002. After receiving an M.A. in Classics at the University of Michigan, I began my Ph.D. at the University of Notre Dame in History of Christianity. For my dissertation I am preparing a study, critical edition, and translation of Prosper of Aquitaine's (c. 390-c.455) book of poems on the teachings of Augustine of Hippo. These poems served as an authoritative guide to Augustine for over a thousand years.
In 2011 I received the Rome Prize in Ancient Studies from the American Academy in Rome (http://aarome.org). I spent the year in the intellectual community of the Academy, studying manuscripts at the Vatican Library and other archives throughout Europe with the support of the Mellon-Mays Travel and Research Grant. This year, I am a fellow at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa (http://www.sns.it/), where I am completing my edition, which will be published in Vienna's corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasicorum Latinorum (http://www.oeaw.ac.at/kvk/kv01.htm) in the near future. Throughout my academic career, I have benefited from the support of the Mellon Mays fellows.

Terah Edun: I first developed a passion for international development and human rights as an undergraduate at Bryn Mawr, where I studied political science and the Sudan-South Sudan relationship. My time studying North African politics in Morocco and working with USAID in Washington D.C. hugely influenced my worldview as well, convincing me to work at the intersection of humanitarian aid and social justice in the global South. After two years in D.C., I packed my bags and left my apartment for the opportunity to live and work in South Sudan with the International Rescue Committee.
Having lived in the world's newest nation for 9 months and counting, I've learned more than I ever imagined when writing a thesis on the history and nature of conflict in the Sudans. As a communications professional, I work with international NGOs, the UN and USAID to advance the interests and the quality of life of vulnerable persons. I share the messaging of the organizations and the voices of refugees and internally displaced people fleeing conflict. It has been a phenomenal experience, informing my prior research and giving me new avenues to explore. Over the next year I plan to continue on to graduate school to research the development of political governance in South Sudan; after all, we're heading into the first national elections in 2015.

Garrett Turner : Between playing the lead role in A Raisin in the Sun, taking trips to Oxford, Cambridge and Edinburgh, and going to an election night party at the US Embassy in London, my time studying in the UK so far has been replete with incredible opportunities. As an undergrad I studied Music and Creative Writing at Emory University, where I sang, danced, acted, wrote poetry and plays. At Emory I was blessed to be mentored through the MMUF program by the late Dr. Rudolph Byrd, who was a great light in the world and a transformative influence in my life. With his guidance, I put together a play comprised of the life and work of Langston Hughes, which was produced in Atlanta at the end of my senior year. After that, my path veered across the Atlantic.
In the middle of the year 2012 I was overjoyed to learn that I had received the Marshall Scholarship for two years of graduate study in the UK. Which brings me to London. I am currently studying for a one-year MA in Theatre and Performance at Queen Mary, University of London.
I have been immensely fortunate in my journey through academia thus far and can only attribute that to the loving support of my family, friends, teachers and colleagues. For the second year of my Marshall Scholarship, I plan to undergo an MA in Acting here in London. Just another step on the road to share my love of poetry, drama and music with as many people as possible in order to enliven spirits and challenge minds.

Sean Forbes : In 2011, I received my PhD in English at the University of Connecticut. My creative dissertation was a full-length book of poetry titled Providencia. The title of this collection comes from my ancestral island of Providencia, Colombia which is situated in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Nicaragua.
I am an Adjunct Professor in English and the Acting Director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Connecticut. I teach creative writing (poetry and flash fiction), classes in poetry from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century, and independent studies in poetic forms. Recently, my poems have appeared in The Chagrin River Review, Crab Orchard Review and Sargasso, A Journal of Caribbean Literature, Language, and Culture. In 2011, Providencia was a semifinalist in the Crab Orchard Series First Book Award competition.

Meet Teona Williams: I developed a strong research interest in the intersections between marginalized groups and the environment during my undergraduate years. I knew that I would not be ready for graduate school until I had actively worked towards these pursuits. I am currently a 2012-2013 Watson fellow. The Watson Fellowship awards 25,000 to college seniors, in selected schools to travel around the world working on a passion.
My project looks at how marginalized groups participate in outdoor recreation/connect to their natural world. I have traveled to India and Malaysia, and I am currently in South Africa executing my project. Next, I will travel to Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Brazil to wrap up my year. This year has taught me strength, resilience and adaptability. Most importantly, it has given me a chance to develop and refine my research interests. I look forward to applying to graduate programs that will shape my love of environmental justice, activism and history in the next two years.
