ICLEI South Asia E-News

November 2019

Emani Kumar
Deputy Secretary General, ICLEI and Executive Director, ICLEI South Asia

Greetings readers!

The past month was full of remarkable achievements and milestones for us. We are proud to announce that ICLEI is a founding member of the Penang Platform for Sustainable Urbanisation, a new collaboration of cities and urban development organisations that was set up at the seventh Asia-Pacific Urban Forum (APUF-7). As one of the steering committee members of the APUF-7, ICLEI was involved in several strategic events at the forum.

Another feather in our cap was the launch of Kota Kinabalu’s Green City Action Plan (GCAP) at the Borneo Green City International Convention in Malaysia. The GCAP has been prepared by ICLEI South and Southeast Asia offices, in partnership with Kota Kinabalu City Hall and with support from the Asian Development Bank.

In India, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation supported CapaCITIES project made headlines when the Vice President of the Federal Council and Minister for Environment, Transport, Energy and Communication, Switzerland, Ms. Simonetta Sommaruga and the Ambassador of Switzerland to India and Bhutan, Dr. Andreas Baum visited Coimbatore, one of our project cities. Ms. Sommaruga interacted with city officials and citizen groups on local climate change action and inaugurated a biomethanation facility that was established under the project.

Several other initiatives have been launched as part of our various projects in Indian cities. Read on for details and more updates on the same.
