September 2016

Emani Kumar
Deputy Secretary General, ICLEI and Executive Director, ICLEI South Asia

The past month has been significant for cities in small islands worldwide with the special Community for towns, cities and provinces of small island states being launched by ICLEI- Local Governments for Sustainability.

Continuing with the efforts to build resilience in the informal settlements, ICLEI South Asia has initiated a pilot project on improving sanitation in Amrapali and Phule Nagar slums in the city of Nashik.

With the initiative of door to door collection of segregated waste in Kishangarh marking success among the community, a pilot project focusing at source segregation of plastic waste and door to door collection has been launched in the city of Jaisalmer.

A Stakeholder Workshop in Rajkot was organised to launch the CapaCITIES project. This project will support local authorities in Rajkot, Siliguri, Udaipur and Coimbatore in formulation and implementation of integrated action plans for climate resilience across priority sectors.

Pilot implementation of climate resilience interventions have been initiated in the ACCCRN cities of Gangtok and Nainital in India and Singra, Mongla and Kustia in Bangladesh, with support from the Small Grants.

ICLEI and its member cities are gearing up to participate in the global summit on housing and sustainable urban development at Habitat III, to be organised at Quito from 17th to 20th of October. This summit will provide a potent opportunity for the international community at all levels to harmonize its understanding of the problems and opportunities posed by current trends in urbanization.

In addition, this newsletter will familiarise us with Mr. Deepak Bhuwania, Mayor of Bhagalpur, India; along with providing a glimpse into the work and challenges of our sustainability team member Ms. Geeta Sandal, Senior Project Officer, Sustainability Management.
