Greetings all!

The month of August has been very eventful for us. Get familiarised with our activities under various projects and  know some new projects initiated through this newsletter.

This edition details the Urban Nexus Training that we organised with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Urban Nexus and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in New Delhi. The event was inaugurated by Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) along with other dignitaries.

The e-news will also inform you about the Climate and Development Knowledge Network's (CDKN) project inception meeting for its next phase which was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. ICLEI South Asia is implementing the project in India, Bangladesh and Nepal.

We also have news on the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) funded CapaCITIES project from Rajkot city. The SDC team along with the project team visited the city to inaugurate two pilot projects as well as meet the Rajkot Municipal Corporation officials.

Besides, we have two new projects to introduce - Gangtok Municipal Corporation supported Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resource Management for Sustainable Development in Gangtok and Solid Waste Management Exposure Workshops under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Phase III funded by the MoHUA through NIUA.

Training on Urban Nexus Conducted under Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities: The Urban Nexus

ICLEI South Asia, with support from GIZ Urban Nexus and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), organised a two-day Urban Nexus Training in New Delhi. The objective was to use the New Urban Agenda framework to evolve a contextual and localised understanding of the importance of integrated resource management. Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, IAS, Secretary, MoHUA addressed the audience and emphasised on the significance of the nexus between Government of India programs on housing, employment, better sanitation for better living conditions. A two-day Training of Trainers workshop was also organised with the aim of improving skills like instructional, communication and facilitation techniques of the participating officials to be able to conduct training programmes themselves.

Visit of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to Rajkot

Ms. Marylaure Crettaz, Counsellor and Head of Swiss Agency of Development and Cooperation (SDC); Dr. Shirish Sinha, Deputy Head, SDC ; and Mr. Andrin Fink, Thematic Advisor, SDC, visited Rajkot to inaugurate two pilot projects and meet the officials of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC). The visit, under SDC funded CapaCITIES project, also included the sapling plantation at the 145 kWp Solar PV installation at the Aji Water Treatment Plant and visit to the Smart Ghar three project site among other activities.

CDKN Partners Meet in Amsterdam to Kick off CDKN’s Next Phase

A team headed by Mr. Emani Kumar, Executive Director, ICLEI South Asia attended the Climate and Development Knowledge Network's (CDKN) project inception meeting for its next phase in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The meeting provided an opportunity for the CDKN alliance partners to meet face-to-face and discuss key topics for working together, such as CDKN’s ways of working, thematic approach and learning process, as well as engagement at upcoming global climate events and fora.

Project Activities under People's Biodiversity Registers in 10 villages in Goa Begins

As part of the ongoing project on development of People's Biodiversity Registers in 10 villages in Goa, supported by Goa State Biodiversity Board, the first round of meetings was conducted in all the villages. During the meeting, the Village Panchayat, members of Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) and other residents were explained in detail about the process of development of the People's Biodiversity Registers and roles of BMC, Panchayat and ICLEI South Asia in the same. The team also collected some information through these initial visits which has been compiled and interim reports for each village have been developed.

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and CapaCITIES Team Visit Kolkata

As part of the CapaCITIES project, a round of meetings was held with officials in the State Government in Kolkata in order to apprise them about the work that is being carried out in the city of Siliguri through the project. The work was highly appreciated, and all the departments expressed their support and cooperation to the project initiatives.

Kochi Takes Part in One Planet Cities Pedalathon

ICLEI South Asia along with World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-India, with support from Kochi Municipal Corporation, organised ‘One Planet Cities Pedalathon’ in Kochi. The objective of the event, under WWF funded One Planet City Challenge project, was to raise awareness and gather support from the citizens for adopting smarter and greener choices of commute.

ICLEI South Asia’s initiatives in Warangal City under PROMISE Project

On-ground activities, under the European Union funded PROMISE project, have been initiated in Warangal, with a series of consultation meetings with the Hon’ble Mayor, Collector Warangal District, Commissioner Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation and other city officials. Among other activities, surveys and group discussions were conducted to comprehend the ideas and requirements regarding the open spaces sector from various stakeholders in the study area in wards 9, 18 and 19 of Shivay Nagar.

Coimbatore Witnesses First E-bin Initiative

Green Era Recyclers, along with Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation and ICLEI South Asia, launched an e-bin initiative in ward 22, Corporation Park under the CapaCITIES Sunya project. The e-bin aims to collect electronic waste, which is presently being disposed with regular domestic waste, to encourage waste segregation and e-waste recycling. The Corporation plans to install more of such bins in other locations as well.

Review Meeting Held in Udaipur under Shakti Smart Cities Project Phase II

ICLEI South Asia, under Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation funded Supporting Sustainable Urban Transport and Built Environment in four Smart Cities in India project, conducted project review meeting in Udaipur - one of the project cities. The objective of the meeting was to update the city officials on the two policies being formulated by the project team, identify new avenues in mobility sector to assist Udaipur and understand the status of ongoing mobility projects in the city.

Training Program on Solid Waste Management in Ajmer City

A training program was organised on Solid Waste Management under the Global Water Partnership funded project Integrated Urban Water Management Planning and Implementation in Ajmer. The program focused on collection, transportation and disposal methods, and techniques for solid waste management in Indian cities.

Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resource Management for Sustainable Development in Gangtok

ICLEI South Asia has initiated a project on mainstreaming biodiversity conservation into urban planning in Gangtok, Sikkim. The project is supported by Gangtok Municipal Corporation. Under this project, a Local Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan for Gangtok will be developed. This will be in accordance with the National Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan and Sikkim State Biodiversity Strategy Action Plan.

Solid Waste Management Exposure Workshop under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Phase III Begins

A new project, through NIUA supported by MoHUA, has been initiated which focuses on conducting Solid Waste Management Exposure workshops for the officials of 1600 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) under Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) Phase III. ICLEI South Asia team will conduct Solid Waste Management Exposure workshops for the local government officials from 120 ULBs in Hyderabad, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Warangal.

Global Climate Action Summit 2018

The Global Climate Action Summit, which will be held from 12th to 14th September, 2018 will bring leaders and people together from around the world to “Take Ambition to the Next Level.” It will also be a launchpad for deeper worldwide commitments and accelerated action from countries—supported by all sectors of society—that can put the globe on track to prevent dangerous climate change and realise the historic Paris Agreement.

Local Renewables Conference 2018

The City of Freiburg, the City of Basel and ICLEI Europe are organising the Local Renewables Conference 2018 from the 24th to 26th October, 2018 in Freiburg, Germany. Join leading and learning cities, policy-makers from European and national governments, businesses, research and finance institutions for the 9th edition of the Local Renewables Series. It will build on the success of previous conferences and will showcase practical and innovative examples of how to reduce energy and resource use, and make ideal use of energy sources and other resources in the region.

Conference of the Parties (COP) 14

From the 17th to 29th November, 2018, the United Nations will call on decision makers from more than 190 countries to step up efforts to halt the biodiversity loss and protect the ecosystems that support food and water security and health for billions of people. The UN Biodiversity Conference (14th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity - COP 14) will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
