Warm greetings to all our readers!

It was a pleasure hosting the Talanoa Dialogue again, this time in Bangladesh in association with the International Centre for Climate Change and Development. Similar to the India Dialogue, stakeholders from diverse backgrounds joined the discussion on achieving Bangladesh's NDC. The e-news will update you on the issues raised at the event.

We also successfully launched the Climate and Development Knowledge Network’s (CDKN) second phase in both India and Bangladesh. The event was an opportunity to reach out to the stakeholders and inform them about CDKN’s new role as a knowledge broker and its intention to work with other organisations in the region working on climate compatible development, primarily on water, energy and food security, gender and social inclusion and climate finance mechanisms.

Our team also participated in the 6th Global Biodiversity Summit of Local and Subnational Governments at the CBD-COP14, UN Biodiversity Conference, organised at Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt. Read on to get the details of the Summit along with our other activities in the month of November.

Second Phase of CDKN Launched in India and Bangladesh amid Stakeholders

The Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) launched its second phase in India and Bangladesh. Gender equity and social inclusiveness, water, food and energy nexus, climate finance and cities are the major themes that will be included in this phase and were discussed at the events. In this new phase, CDKN will deeply engage with India, Bangladesh and Nepal in Asia (along with others in Africa and Latin America), and provide them with enhanced knowledge to support ambitious climate action, and boost learning on climate compatible development.

6th Global Biodiversity Summit of Local and Subnational Governments at CBD-COP14

ICLEI South Asia participated in the 6th Global Biodiversity Summit of Local and Subnational Governments at the CBD-COP14, UN Biodiversity Conference, organised at Sharm-El-Sheikh, Egypt. The Summit was organised by ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, nrg4SD, Secretariat of Convention of Biodiversity and Government of Egypt. The Summit deliberated on issues pertaining to biodiversity conservation across the globe and the need for cities to take a leading role in the same. One of the main points of discussion was mainstreaming biodiversity conservation into energy, infrastructure and health.

Bangladesh Hosts Cities and Regions Talanoa Dialogue

ICLEI South Asia and International Centre for Climate Change and Development jointly organised the Cities and Regions Talanoa Dialogues: The Bangladesh Dialogue in Dhaka. Stakeholders from the Bangladesh Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bangladesh Planning Commission, Department of Environment, local governments, and international community, multi-bilateral financing institutions, development partners, private sectors and different civil societies participated in the dialogue.

Rajkot City Gets OPCC Award, Urban LEDS II Launched at WWF-India Event

At a conference on ‘Role of Cities in Addressing Climate Change’, organised by WWF-India in partnership with ICLEI South Asia, Rajkot city was felicitated with One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) award. At the same event, phase II of Urban LEDS project was also introduced. The project is supported by European Commission and will be implemented by ICLEI World Secretariat and UN-HABITAT with support from ICLEI regional offices in South Asia, Europe, Latin America, East Asia, South Africa.

Roundtable on ‘Road-map for Electrifying IPT Sector in Indian Cities’ at Urban Mobility India Conference and Expo 2018

ICLEI South Asia organised a roundtable on ‘Road-map for Electrifying IPT Sector in Indian Cities’ at Urban Mobility India Conference and Expo 2018 in Nagpur. The roundtable saw discussions around the idea that numerous cities intend to accelerate the electrification of the IPT sector, however very little documented information exists. ICLEI South Asia is assisting several cities to transform their fossil fuel dominated IPT fleet into cleaner electric technology based fleet. The transition from fossil fuel to electric technology provides crucial emissions mitigation opportunity for cities.

ICLEI Member City Singra Receives First Urban Resilience Award 2018

Singra Municipality of Bangladesh, a member of ICLEI, received the ‘Urban Resilience Award 2018’, at the Third Annual National Conference on Urban Resilience to Climate Change, for demonstrating excellence in urban resilience and climate actions. This is the first time the Urban Resilience Award has been introduced, to support and encourage cities and individuals in building urban resilience at the local level.

City Assessment Visits Begin under EcoLogistics Project

The team for the EcoLogistics - Low Carbon Freight for Sustainable Cities project commenced city assessment visits to Panaji, Kochi and Shimla to initiate activities. The agenda for all the visits was to assess the current situation as well as develop a deeper understanding of issues related to urban freight in the project cities. The project is supported by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), Germany.

Solid Waste Management City Cluster Exposure Workshop in Jaipur

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has engaged National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) to conduct a series of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) solid waste management exposure workshops in the country. NIUA has further contracted ICLEI South Asia, Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) and India PPP Capacity Building Trust to conduct these trainings. As part of the same program, a three-day workshop was conducted in Jaipur. These workshops seek to strengthen institutional capacities at ULBs towards collection, treatment, disposal and efficient management of various types of wastes among other goals.

Swiss Film Screened at Siliguri International Film Festival 2018

As part of the ‘Swiss Films on Wheels’ project, two children’s films – Heidi and My Life as a Zucchini – were screened at Modela Caretaker Centre and School and Siliguri International Film Festival respectively. The ‘Swiss Films on Wheels’ is a friendship bus that carries, throughout India, a message of friendship, trust, respect and endurance. The event was organised under the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation funded CapaCITIES project.

Conference of the Parties (COP) 24

This COP24 Summit is being held in Katowice, Poland from the 2nd to 14th of December, 2018. The conference includes the 24th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP24), 14th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP 14) and the Conference of Signatories to the Paris Agreement (CMA 1). The conference is also expected to finalise the rules for implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change under the Paris Agreement work programme (PAWP). About 20 thousand people from 190 countries will take part in the event, including politicians, representatives of non-governmental organisations, scientific community and business sector.
