ICLEI South Asia E-News

January 2021

Emani Kumar
Deputy Secretary General, ICLEI and Executive Director, ICLEI South Asia

Dear Friends,

We got off to a flying start in January, with an agreement being signed with the Gujarat government to formalise cooperation for the second phase of the CapaCITIES project, which is being supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The project will provide technical support for the development of innovative financing models for large-scale deployment of climate-resilient infrastructure and the preparation of relevant policies.

Among other key developments, three Reverse Vending Machines were inaugurated in Hyderabad, under the “Enhancing Circular Economy Perspectives - Plastic Waste Management Strategy and Action Plan for Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation” project, supported by the IGES Centre Collaborating with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), Japan, with ICLEI South Asia as the implementation partner. It is hoped that the installation of these machines will improve public awareness on the need for creating a circular economy for plastics.

We also released a policy brief on “Local Urban Resilience Plans Using Climate Adaptation Indicators: Development and Integration in National Planning Processes” in Bangladesh at an online session during the Gobeshona Global Conference. The policy brief has been developed under the CDKN programme. Additionally, we launched an initiative jointly with Dhulikhel Municipality in Nepal, under which ICLEI South Asia will help to conduct a voluntary local review of the Sustainable Development Goals as per the strategies set out by the city. There are also reports on the review and documentation of Urban95 programme activities and on the launch of Gangtok’s City Biodiversity Index, Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the Illustrated Natural Asset Map of Gangtok in this edition.

We hope you enjoy reading this newsletter and look forward to your feedback.
