ICLEI South Asia Participates in the First International Green Cities Forum in Thailand

ICLEI South Asia participated in the first International Green Cities Forum in Thailand. The organisation is preparing a Sustainable Urban Development Framework for the IMT-GT Region. As the ALP Secretariat, ICLEI South Asia also conducted a session on the Benefits of the ALP to Members of the IMT-GT region. The forum witnessed various speakers with expertise in fields like sustainability, climate, environment and energy.

Awareness Building Rally in Mongla

An awareness building rally and meeting was conducted in Mongla city as part of a project being implemented through the Small Grants Programme that was administered by ICLEI South Asia. This programme was supported by Rockefeller Foundation to provide financial assistance to implement some of the resilience interventions identified in the City Resilience Strategies developed under the ACCCRN project. It was used to support innovative and result oriented interventions in partner cities of ACCCRN such as Mongla.

Result Oriented Monitoring for PROMISE Project

An independent review of the on-going project ‘Promotion of Inclusive, Sustainable Growth and Diversity to Strengthen Local Governments’ (PROMISE) was conducted by an independent expert from European Union Mr. Ian White. The review involved meetings and discussions with municipal officials, project implementation teams, and prominent citizens in order to record the progress, and understand sanitation related issues in Ajmer and mobility issues in Karnal. Discussions were also carried out with regard to open spaces in Warangal and sewerage in Jabalpur.

City Council of Kochi Municipal Corporation Resolves to Work with ICLEI South Asia on INTERACT- Bio Project

INTERACT-Bio project, funded by German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety through the International Climate Initiative, is designed to improve the utilisation and management of nature within fast-growing cities of Brazil, Tanzania and India. The city council of the Kochi Municipal Corporation (KMC) met for a special meeting where the project activities and its benefits were presented to the councilors by ICLEI South Asia. A Memorandum of Understanding between KMC and ICLEI South Asia has been signed for this project.

Increasing Efficiency in Water Supply in Siliguri

As part of the CapaCITIES project, supported by Swiss Development Corporation, two acoustic water leak detection machines have been procured, and handed over to Siliguri Municipal Corporation. These machines will help reduce the wastage of water from leaks by pinpointing the leak in the water supply pipeline, even before a puddle is formed on the surface. Officials of SMC were trained by the suppliers - Taisei International in the use and handling of the machines.

Training Program on Solid Waste Management in Kishangarh

A training program was conducted on door to door segregated waste collection and management under the Integrated Urban Water Management Planning and Implementation project in Kishangarh Municipal Council. The aim was to build capacity of municipal officials and sanitary workers on waste segregation and management techniques. The municipal council agreed to support ICLEI South Asia for setting up the compost facilities in wards 13 and 18.

Pune City's Selection as Solar City under 'Development of Solar City' Program

ICLEI South Asia has been selected as the consultant to prepare the Solar City Master Plan for Pune city which was selected as a Solar City in 2016. The first stakeholder consultation was conducted where representatives from Pune Municipal Corporation, Public Sector Undertakings, local energy experts, NGOs working in the field of energy and environment, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited officials, Pune University, Pune city real estate companies, and Green Building certification experts participated.

Amaravati's Infrastructure Development under HRIDAY Scheme

Amaravati is getting transformed due to infrastructure development under The National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) Scheme of Ministry of Urban Development that started in 2015. Apart from improvement in connectivity and mobility, the city is also developing a heritage walkway under HRIDAY to promote heritage of the town. ICLEI South Asia, with its partner Indian Heritage Cities Network Foundation, has been selected as City Anchor for Amaravati by Government of India to facilitate planning and advising, and supporting local authorities for successful implementation of the scheme.

ICLEI South Asia signs MoU with Ludhiana Municipal Corporation

ICLEI South Asia has signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation under the project ‘Supporting Sustainable Urban Transport and Built Environment in Four Indian Smart Cities’. The project aims to deliver city scale action plans under transport and built environment for four smart cities. It will help to build capacity of local authorities on smart built environment approach. This includes promoting sustainable transport and built environment principles in ongoing and planned city activities. ICLEI South Asia will work on mobility issues in the city with a focus on core city areas.

Rajkot Municipal Corporation Prepares Green Building Policy for Rajkot City

The draft Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) Green Building Policy Guidelines has been developed by ICLEI South Asia as part of ‘Building Efficiency Accelerator’ partnership, and shared with key RMC officials for feedback. The Rajkot Municipal Commissioner Mr. Banchhanidhi Pani announced that after being selected as a SMART city, Rajkot will now strive to become ‘best city to live in’ with the adoption of RMC Green building policy. The policy aims to create incentives for resource efficient buildings that are urgently needed in our cities to reduce the ever-increasing demand for resources by building sector.

Micro-Catchment Delineation and Socio-Environmental Assessment in Solapur and Vijayawada Catchments

Under the IAdapt project, supported by IDRC, ICLEI South Asia along with its consortium partners, has delineated the micro-catchments in the catchment areas of Solapur and Vijayawada. ICLEI South Asia and Athena Infonomics have conducted Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and quadrat studies in these cities to assess the socio-economic and environmental status of the micro-catchments . The information will be used to assess the micro-catchments and select one in each city that will be used as the project site in both the cities.

"I am very happy to share that I was recently awarded as Executive Officer Vijaynagar (located in Ajmer District) by the Quality Control of India (QCI) and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (Government of Rajasthan) for the work done related to sanitation and cleanliness. A Regional Conference on “Peri-Urban Ecosystems for Enhancing Urban Resilience”

This regional Conference, organised by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, South Asia and Gorakhpur Environmental Action Group, will examine various themes including urbanisation, managing the peri-urban spaces, maintaining critical natural resources among other issues at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Asia LEDS Forum and Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congress 2017

The dates of the Asia LEDS Forum 2017 - "Catalyzing Support for NDC Implementation in Asia" (5th-6th of December) and the 3rd Asia-Pacific Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation - Resilient Cities Asia Pacific Congress 2017 (RCAP 2017) (7th-8th of December) are out. Both the events are going to be organised in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
