Warm greetings to all our readers!

March proved to be yet another productive month for us. We have made significant progress in many of our projects.

We are very excited to have started work in the landscapes of Himachal Pradesh through the SECURE Himalaya project. A meeting to develop a methodology under the project was held recently in Shimla.

We are also developing a Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (LBSAP) for Kochi, which makes it the first Indian city to develop an LBSAP.

Several workshops have also been held under many of our other projects in different cities.

Addresssing Landscape Degradation in Himachal Pradesh

As part of the UNDP supported SECURE Himalaya project, ICLEI South Asia is working on landscape degradation and measures to address the same in the Lahaul, Pangi and Kinnaur landscapes of Himachal Pradesh. In this regard, a discussion with the State Forest Department of Himachal Pradesh was carried out to finalise the project methodology and develop a deeper understanding of the landscapes. The meeting was followed by a workshop and interactions with local stakeholders. The work will begin shortly.

Urban Nexus Presented as a Means of Implementation to Deliver Global Agendas

A Policy Development Workshop on Applying Urban Nexus Concept to Implementing Global Agendas was organised in Bangkok under the framework of the Regional GIZ Urban Nexus Project. This project is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. The project’s political partner is United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific (UNESCAP) and the implementing partner is ICLEI South Asia. At the workshop, the status of each country’s Voluntary National Review and Nationally Determined Contribution preparations, in relation to the Urban Nexus approach were assessed, and cross-sectoral and integrated resource approaches were identified, among other activities. Besides, the participants conducted a problem tree analysis and developed project planning matrices, elaborating solutions to address core problems. The delegates worked in their country groups to find solutions to the identified challenges using the Logical Framework method including indicators and timeframe.

RURBAN Meeting to Finalise Pilot Projects held in Solapur

The 2nd RURBAN meeting in Solapur under the International Development Research Centre supported Integrated Rural Urban Water Management for Climate Based Adaptations in Indian Cities (IAdapt) project was conducted in Solapur. The aim of the meeting was to update the stakeholders on ongoing project activities, share results of the IAdapt tools and finalise the pilot projects to be implemented in rural and urban areas. In addition, the 3rd project partners’ meeting was held in Chennai where teams from partner organisations presented updates on the project activities and discussed the next semester’s work plan.

Kochi Becomes First Indian City to Develop a Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan

Development of a Local Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (LBSAP) of Kochi is one the main outputs of The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety, Germany supported INTERACT-Bio project. With the aim of initiating the same, a meeting was organised in Kochi wherein representatives from all wards of the city participated. Through the meeting, ward level issues with regard to biodiversity conservation, their drivers of degradation, and possible solutions were assessed. Similar exercises will now be carried out in each ward and the information thus generated will be collated to prepare the LBSAP in a very participatory manner.

Real World Infrastructure Problems Raised at Urban Nexus Training

Regional GIZ Urban Nexus along with Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of Development Administration (YASHADA) in cooperation with ICLEI South Asia organised two trainings of two days each in Pune and Delhi. The trainings were organised under the framework of the Regional GIZ ‘Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities: Urban Nexus’ project. Participants from training institutes and cities actively engaged in discussions on real world infrastructure problems in their cities on air pollution, waste water and solid waste management. The diversity of the participants resulted in a very intense engagement and discussion on the development of possible multi-sectoral, inter-institutional, coordinated solutions based on key elements of the Design Thinking method.

Resilient Cities 2019

Resilient Cities 2019 will be the 10th anniversary of the Global Forum on Urban Resilience and Adaptation, taking place over three days from 26th to 28th of June in Bonn, Germany. This special edition aims to discuss the state of local resilience, evaluate its progress and encourage all stakeholders to take action under the lens of the Paris Agreement and the resilience targets of the 2030 Agenda. The forum offers an opportunity for engagement among political leaders and representatives from the private sector, international organisations and research institutions.

Fourth Mission Innovation Ministerial Program

Mission Innovation’s fourth annual Ministerial gathering (MI-4), will take place on the 28th of May in Vancouver, Canada. Hosted by the Government of Canada, MI-4 brings together ministers, business leaders and innovators to share ideas, best practices and to facilitate collaboration towards the development of affordable and sustainable clean energy solutions. The theme of the programme is ‘Accelerating Progress towards a Clean Energy Future’. Members will have an opportunity to showcase specific innovations and investments and set the course for the coming year, while also creating new partnerships, strengthening existing relationships and learning from a variety of leaders in the global clean energy ecosystem.
