Division News Briefs

  • The Division of Public Health Sciences congratulates Joaquin Barnoya, MD, MPH, associate professor of surgery, on receiving a four-year R01 multi-primary investigator award from the Fogarty International Center at NIH to evaluate how electronic cigarettes are impacting Guatemala and Mexico. Read the news announcement.
  • Join the Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities (PECaD) on July 31 at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Siteman Cancer Center at Christian Hospital. Town halls are also scheduled on August 27, 28, and September 8 for community members to voice opinions about the new Siteman Cancer Center at Christian Hospital.
  • The 5th Rural Cancer Disparities WUSTL Siteman-SIUSM Partnership Retreat will be held August 24 from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. in the Taylor Avenue Building. This retreat is sponsored by the Siteman-SIUSM Rural Cancer Disparities Partnership and is a chance for WUSTL and SIU investigators, area clinicians and community members to come together for a day of networking and learning about cancer disparities in the rural southern Illinois region. A detailed schedule and request for official RSVPs will be available at a later date.  
  • Media Notes: 1) Adetunji Toriola, MD, PhD, wrote June's blog for the Gateway Region YMCA on Men's Health Month. 2) Reuters interviewed Graham Colditz, MD, DrPH, on the link between a low fat diet, and breast cancer survival odds. 3) The  United States Department of Defense created a research video featuring Bettina Drake, PhD, MPH, and her research on prostate cancer in VA hospitals. 4) Popular Science spoke with Graham Colditz, MD, DrPH, about alcohol intake and cancer risk. 5) Hank Dart, MS, was featured discussing the health benefits of melons for July's In Good Taste segment. 6) St. Louis Public Radio interviewed Adetunji Toriola, PhD, MD, MPH, on cancer risk associated with a recent report on Cold Water Creek. 7) July's Gateway Region YMCA blog, provided by Jean Hunleth, PhD, MPH, explains the role of children as caregivers.
