SJHFlogo
Dear Handmaids and Servants of the Gardener,

Heavenly Father, wipe the scourge of racism from the face of the earth.
Lord Jesus Christ, save the unborn children who are threatened with abortion and guide their mothers to choose life.
Holy Spirit, breath new life into both lungs of the Church so that we may experience in our day the full visible unity of Catholic and Orthodox Christians.

I had mentioned several days ago that I would have a big announcement. I've decided to simplify that into several big announcements over a series of e-mails this week. The first Big Announcement of 2015 concerns the return of Fourth Friday Free Family Flix For Fun with the showing of Mary of Nazareth this Friday evening January 23 at 6:00 p.m. at our Welcome Center. Please call us or e-mail us by 9:00 a.m. Thursday to let us know how many of you plan to join us.

Let me explain why the absence, why the return, and what we plan to show.

As many of you know, we rented movie theaters in Evansville and Owensboro in 2013 and 2014 to show the movies from Ignatius Press, Restless Heart and Mary of Nazareth. These are beautiful, powerful movies. In the midst of learning how to get them, we also learned about licensing for public performance. Eventually, it became clear that we need to have a licence for the public showing of any of these movies or any other movie with a copyright. We paid for that license to show the movies in the theater, and we need to pay a license to show them in our Welcome Center. So, we halted the showing of movies, other than the ones we have created, in our Welcome Center last year until I could get a better handle on this.

The Lord provides. I wanted to do 2 things as soon as possible. However, we ended 2014 in the black, but we began 2015 with $0. So, I had no money to buy a license for Mary of Nazareth...until Saturday evening. A benefactor asked if we could use $1300. Of course, I said, "YES!" That was the sign to me that we should get the license and 25 copies of the Mary of Nazareth DVD because it would cover that cost.

So, here is the deal: Below is the list of the movies we are planning to show this year. We will not charge anything to anyone to view them in our Welcome Center. We will need to buy a separate license from Ignatius Press to show each one, but that license will give us 6-12 months to show it as many times as we want to do so. Also, we will have copies of the DVD available for you to get and to add to your personal video collection at about the time that we will have our Main Showing. We will suggest a particular donation for each DVD.

I can hear it now: "Mark, what if we can't make it to the show the night you plan to show a particular movie?" I hear you loud and clear. So, there are 3 solutions, not just one.
  1. Contact us to request another night to show that movie again for anyone. There is no reason for us to show movies only on the Fourth Friday of the month. There are other Fridays in the month, too.
  2. Ask for the Welcome Center on another day or night for your particular group. Invite your family and your friends, your CRHP group, your Cursillo group, your Bible study, your Confirmation class, your RCIA, your prayer group. Basically, you can have the Welcome Center for your particular group to watch that particular movie because, for example, we have bought the license to show Mary of Nazareth as many times as we want to do so for the next 12 months, as long as it is at our Welcome Center. Come to God's Country a little earlier, and pray the Rosary or the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
  3. Get the DVD from us so that you can watch it in your own home. These DVDs are for private use only. For justice's sake, we are purchasing the licenses necessary to show them publicly, but you can give them away as Easter presents, First Communion presents, Confirmation presents, Birthday presents, Christmas presents, etc. Your donation for these DVDs helps our apostolate. (We do not have them all now, but we will be getting them throughout the year.)
Sure, we could break the law by publicly showing any of these DVDs, and no one would probably find out because we are such a small apostolate. However, God and our conscience would know. They are the only voices that matter on Judgment Day. Furthermore, would you want your property used without someone asking your permission? All of Gardener's Servant Productions are intellectual property. We have invested your money and your time to save souls and to form faithful Catholics. We want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with no strings attached. So, we have given away thousands of brochures and books so far. Yet, you want us to be self-sustaining. One of the ways to do that is by asking for an appropriate donation for our materials, hoping that we receive enough financial support through our materials to sustain our whole apostolate.

Please join us, won't you, in respecting the copyright laws and enjoying Catholic movies that build up our faith? I plan to send out reminders a little ahead of time, but please call us by Thursday 9:00 a.m. (812-357-2119) before each show so that we know how many people we can expect. Don't forget the snacks!!! It's even more fun when we can share favorite treats.
