ACE Mentor Program

Registration for the program closes on Tues., Sept. 30th.

This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for our juniors or seniors to participate in the ACE Mentor Program. ACE is a cost-free, after school mentoring experience where Architecture, Engineering and Construction professionals work together on a project-based learning activity to teach young people about the opportunities available to them in the design and construction industry. Trinity River Photo Contest

Announcing the 2014 Trinity River Photo Contest- free contest, open to everyone.

Private Violence 

Mon., Oct. 6th

The City of Dallas Domestic Violence Task Force is offering a free showing of an unreleased HBO documentary called “Private Violence” on the evening of Oct. 6th in commemoration of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Dallas ISD is one of the sponsors of the event. The event is free and open to the public, although it is requested that people wishing to attend register through the Eventbrite link below.  Mayor Rawlings will be speaking briefly at this event.

High School Aerospace Scholars Needed

High School Aerospace Scholars (HAS) 2014-2015 needs Texas high school juniors. Please visit our websiteHAS is a NASA unique opportunity for students who are interested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Selected students will begin their journey with the HAS Online Experience that will start in November and conclude in April. During this time, students will create technical writings and drawings, solve math problems, participate in discussion forums and chat sessions with NASA engineers and scientists. You can also learn more about the program by viewing “High School Aerospace Scholars: A Journey of Discovery” video here.

TAG TREK T-Shirts: Order by Friday, Sept. 19th!!

Each year, students submit drawings for that year's TAG TREK T-shirt Design Contest, with the winning design announced at TREK. The deadline has been extended to order your t-shirt, and parents and students are equally encouraged to order! TAG Families may order 2014 TREK Shirts until Friday, Sept. 19th at 4:15 pm. Family members need to indicate the grade level of their student on this order form. Please print and complete the form (and include a check made payable to TAG Magnet) and submit to Mr. Buchanan in Room 312 by the Friday deadline. Senior parents will have the 2015 Senior template on the shirt.

TAG FORUM -- Recap

Dallas Arts District CEO Catherine Cuellar, pictured above with students Jordan Blanco, Dylan Koss, Jovahana Avila, Chris Tschiemer, Marshall Honaker, Miles Longshaw, and Christopher McDougal, was the featured keynote speaker.

TAG held its annual Forum on Friday, September 12th. This year’s Forum was designed to lay the groundwork for Trek, which focuses on urban planning and design. At Forum, students heard from various professionals in Urban Planning. The kick-off speaker for the day was Catherine Cuellar, CEO of the Dallas Arts District, which is the nation’s largest contiguous space dedicated to various artistic endeavors. Cuellar is at the helm of the 68-acre Dallas Arts District that sits in the heart of downtown Dallas and is home to most of the city’s major cultural institutions. In her kick-off address to the entire school, Ms. Cuellar shared her background with students and talked about the many challenges and rewards of the Dallas Arts District. In the afternoon of Forum, students self-selected to listen to speakers in four sub-disciplines that will be represented at Trek: regulatory, economic, physical, and community development. TAG TREK: Urban Design Theme and Volunteers Needed: Sept. 25-27 & Sept. 29-30

TREK is a multi-level learning experience for all grade levels. Students will investigate The Bottoms and the 10th Street Development District to determine how Townview can become an active community member. They will present their ideas in a premise document that will explore the history of the area, observations made about the existing community structure in response to challenge questions, design proposals, and impact statements. Students will communicate their design proposals through visual aides presented on the final afternoon at the presentation convention. It will be held Sept. 25, 26, 27 (optional Saturday community service), 29 & 30 from 9:15 am to 5:00pm. 
 
The offsite requires at least 10 parent volunteers per shift (am and pm) over the five days of TREK. Volunteers MUST complete a DISD volunteer background check (see "DISD Volunteer Registration" above) and bring a printed copy of the approval (last page of the volunteer registration process) to the event. Ideally, these volunteers are professionals in the field who can employ their planning experience to help guide the students in their planning proposals. It is fine to volunteer for a half-day, a full-day, a single session, or all days.

PTSA General Meeting--Recap

brainThe first PTSA General Meeting of the year was extremely well attended and thought provoking. After a short business meeting and the introduction of Ms. Kay Langat, who is working with Ms. Marberry in the TAG counseling office, and Mr. Jose Valerio, SEM Counselor, Author/Expert James Munton gave a highly entertaining presentation on the topic of CyberSense that grabbed everyone's attention with his descriptions of various real-life scenarios and how to stay safe. The TAG community came away with a heightened understanding of the risks of life in an online world. Many thanks to everyone who attended. Mark your calendars to attend the next PTSA General Meeting on Tues., Oct. 21st.

For those PTSA members who were unable to pick up their directories at the picnic or PTSA meeting, if you are not already a 2014-15 member, you may join and receive your directory! We will get your directory home through your student at school.

DISD Volunteer Registration
If you plan to volunteer in any way at TAG during the school year, you must first register (even if you have registered in previous years) in the fall through the DISD website:
Click on "Volunteer" in yellow at the top of the page, then "Volunteers" from the drop-down menu, scroll to item #2 ("Complete Volunteer Application"), and choose either English or Spanish. The process only takes a few minutes!
 
After completing your registration, follow this link to Volunteer Spot for TAG volunteer sign-ups mentioned above, as well as others.

This committee is responsible for reviewing and approving all activity fund transactions including fundraisers, check requests, expenditures, P1-Cs, etc. The committee meets monthly at 8:30 a.m. on the second Friday of each month.

Select the "Parents" tab along the top of the page, click on "Join the PTSA," then click on the word "online" in the second paragraph.

2014-15 Texas PTA Reflections Competition

This year's theme for PTA Reflections art competition is "The World Would be a Better Place if..."  The deadline for submissions is Oct. 30th. Students may create and submit works of art in six categories: dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and visual arts. Stay tuned for more detailed information.

If you have not done so already, please return your student's completed enrollment packet and forms to the TAG Office immediately. The packets were completed at Flight School for freshman and accompanied other students home on the first day of school. Thank you!
