Here Come the Drillers
With Helco issuing an Request for Proposal for an additional 50 megawatts of geothermal-sourced electricity, developers are lining up to do exploratory drilling in Puna. We have heard of 20 developers who are interested. A recent newspaper article discusses the aspirations of two of them. Here's a link to the article:
To stop the industrialization of Puna, we need to band together now. We need your help to contact the Mayor now and to spread the word that we will have a Community Meeting Thursday, November 29 at 6:30 pm at the Akebono Theatre. Details below.
Ask the Mayor to Support
Quiet Nights (Bill 292)
Puna Pono Alliance has sponsored a county ordinance to stop exploratory and production drilling at night. With your help and testimony, the bill passed the Hawaii County Council. Please call Mayor Billy Kenoi or email him asking him to support the people of puna and sign Bill 292 into law...if he veto's this bill it is likely to happen this coming week so please take a moment to make personal contact with him soon. His email address is email@example.com Telephone: 961-8521.
In the event that Mayor Kenoi does veto Bill 292, we are hopeful that the new council will override the veto. With an almost completely new council, we need to talk to the various new council members and let them know how important this issue is for people living in Puna. Please also take time to talk with Zendo Kern and Gregor Ilagan when you see them. They will be issued with council email addresses this week and those will be available on the county website at http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/contact-us/ Contact them by phone at 961-8223 after Dec 3.
Community Meeting Thursday, November 29, 6:30 - Akebono Theatre
Please join us. We are very lucky to have some great people speaking:
Palikapu Dedman, President of The Pele Defense Fund, will speak on the impact of geothermal development on Hawaiian Religious Beliefs and Cultural Practices, Act 55, and some of the other issues we are facing.
Harry Kim, former mayor and long time civil defense director, will talk about:
Act 97 – That repealed the geothermal sub zones and stripped the county of geothermal permitting. All permits to drill are now granted by the state, the county has been taken out of the loop. Harry will explain what that means and how it affects us. We will be working to change this at the legislature and Harry will be helping us with that.
Act 55 – Whats happening with the PLDC and what we need to do about it.
Dominic Yagong, former chairman of the Hawaii County Council, will speak on Bill 292, the Drilling Noise Ordinance, the health study proposal he put forward at Puna Pono Alliance request, Act 55, the PLDC, and the importance of home rule for the county.
Sydney Singer, a medical anthropologist, will speak about the health impacts of Low Frequency Noise and Vibro Accoustic Disease and how geothermal may be involved.
We will also discuss the health study: Peter Adler's panel to determine what additional studies need to be done if any and the Dec. 6th Windward Planning Commission hearing regarding rules for Geothermal Asset Fund.
We will open the meeting up to questions from the community after the speakers finish their presentations.
Please help us get the word out about this meeting and encourage your family, friends and neighbors to join us.
