Letting Puna be Puna

Happy Holidays Puna... Some great news from HELCO to end the year!

After careful review of all geothermal bids, Hawaii Electric Light has determined that none of the submitted bids sufficiently met both the low-cost and technical requirements of the Geothermal RFP. We are currently working with the Independent Observer to develop a request that will be sent to the bidders. The request will give the bidders the opportunity to provide additional information so that we can make an informed decision that is in the best interests of our customers and residents and that meets the goals of the Geothermal RFP. These goals include lowering customer bills, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, allowing for continued integration and management of intermittent renewable resources, maintaining reliability of service, and protecting the health and safety of the public and environment. We appreciate the efforts the bidders have made to date and look forward to working with them and the Independent Observer on next steps.

This will not be the end of any proposed Geothermal expansion on the Big Island by any means, but is a very good note to end the year on!

A huge thank-you to the four hundred people who marched on HELCO and the four thousand that signed the PPA petition which we handed to Jay Ignacio at the end of the March. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

Puna Pono Alliance is delighted with this outcome at this time however we are getting ready to take the fight to the State in the 2014 legislative session.

To continue this fight we will need funding. We will be very grateful for any contributions from the awesome community of Puna and our friends further a field.

Please contribute by credit card or Paypal at punapono.com/contribute or by check to PO Box 492-668, Keaau, HI 96749. All checks should be made out to Puna Pono Alliance.

Join the "Flash Network", help achieve more good for Puna at the State in 2014

PPA has formed a 'Flash Network" of people interested and able to testify at the State level for the 2014 Legislative session, sometimes at short notice. If you are interested in being a part of this to help by supplying testimony at crucial times, please email barb@punapono.com with "Flash Network" in the subject line.  We'll make it simple for you to offer testimony. The research will be done on each Bill and you'll be offering talking points and training on how to testify using the Hawaii State Legislature website. A few mins and you'll be done and this can make a huge difference to the outcome of important Bills and help kill bad Bills.

Another way to get involved with our community...

Applications are being sought by the Hawaii County Council from people interested in serving their community on the Boards and Commissions in 2014. PPA encourages you to seriously consider applying for one of these positions. Serving the community in this way can be very rewarding and satisfying. Check out this link to find out details of what positions are to be filled and make an application.  http://www.hawaiicounty.gov/boards-and-commissions

If you wish to stay informed about geothermal community action, receive the Puna Pono Alliance Newsletter and Bob Petricci''s Updates directly, email newsletter@punapono.com with NEWSLETTER in the subject line.

Visit our website punapono.com for information about Fracking (Enhanced Geothermal), Geothermal, making testimony at the Senate, House, and County, etc...it's a great resource!

We sometimes ask for people to come out and support us with testimony, especially when important legislation is being passed. This can be done in person, in writing, by email or video.
If you have never given testimony but would like to, we can guide you in this process. It's an empowering thing to do and an action that is of immense value when it comes to passing legislation. When the 'we the people speak' en masse, the politicians listen!

Visit the Puna Pono Alliance booth at Maku''u Market on Sundays, and pick up information and a T shirt. Talk to your neighbors, work colleagues, family and friends about the future you want for Puna.

If you have an organization that you are a part of and would like to have PPA do a presentation please email barb@punapono.com with details.

If you want to get involved, there are lots of ways to help. Come to the Tuesday Meeting at HAAS, 15-1397 Homestead Road, Pahoa, at 4.30pm and get involved.
If you have a skill that would be useful, have questions, or want information, please contact the secretary at barb@punapono.com or 808 339 4344.

Puna Pono Alliance needs funds to keep up the fight for Puna, please contribute by credit card or Paypal at punapono.com/contribute or by check to PO Box 492-668, Keaau, HI 96749. All checks should be made out to Puna Pono Alliance.
