Racial Justice and Building Community
How do our race and class backgrounds affect our experiences in the Melrose community, and the experiences of other families & teachers? For white parents: let's understand and challenge how our white privilege & entitlement show up, and help build racial equity at Melrose. For parents of color: come talk about what our experiences have been like at Melrose and what we can do to support each other. For everyone: come strategize about how to support our vibrant, diverse school community and make sure it's one where families & teachers of color thrive. This conversation is open to all Melrose families & teachers and everyone is encouraged to attend! Thursday Nov 2nd from 6-7:30pm. Potluck and childcare by donation.
Green team announcement - Exciting news!
Trust for Public Land will be working in partnership with OUSD and Green Schoolyards America to help us make some significant improvements to our schoolyards. Our focus is greening and shade! We are one of five schools chosen to start the project. We have a kickoff meeting planned during our community service day on November 4th from 10am-12pm (community service day is from 9am-1pm). Everyone is welcome to come participate - bring the kids and your ideas. We will be discussing the project and ways individuals can contribute - help us shape our new schoolyard! There will be ongoing monthly meetings. If you would like to be a part of the planning and cannot attend November 4th, please contact us.

Petition: Success and Equal Opportunities for OUSD Dual
Multilingualism helps to advance racial, social and economic justice for students and families in our communities by providing an increasingly valuable skill in today’s workforce and economy. The vision for the Multilingual Pathway is to provide a welcoming environment for Spanish-speaking newcomers, African American, Asian Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, and many other diverse Oakland students and families. Dual immersion and multilingual programs can be key to dismantling structural racism in our public education system, but only if we are intentional around how we engage with students, families and educators. In order to realize our vision, we need to support cultural humility along with multilingualism, a love and respect for one’s own culture and language as well as a deep value and desire to learn about others.
In order to ensure the success of these highly valuable and powerful programs that are being offered as attractive OUSD options, we feel the necessity and urgency to ensure that District level partners support growing an inclusive OUSD Multilingual Pathway. To sign the parent petition, contact:
