Bulletin for December 18, 2017
We hope that your first few months of this school year have gone well. As we prepare for a new calendar year, we wanted to make sure that you know about a few things happening at the school.
1) MLA will offer a TK class next year
even though OUSD does not list it in their materials. So please spread the word, especially to Spanish speaking families!
2) There are rumors that MLA will move to a new site because we are over capacity. MLA has NO intention of moving,
we want to stay at this site and are planning on improving this site with new grants to fix our outside areas.
3) Lead tests for the drinking fountains showed that one fountain had a level of lead slightly higher than the rest (which all passed for safe levels) and so the fountain has been turned off
4) The OUSD Board voted for $5 million cuts to schools. Melrose will have to cut 2% (about $80,000) from its budget, parents are organizing a gofundme (https://www.gofundme.com/melrose-leadership-academy
) to help raise funds for the school. Please share with your families and friends!
If you have any questions, let me know!
Family Unity Night
Please join us on Thursday December 21st, 6:00pm-8:00pm. We will celebrate the holiday season with a Potluck dinner ( please bring a dish to share). Padres Unidos will host an arts and crafts bazaar, tamale sale, and coat donation station (if you have a coat that is clean and in good condition please bring to school on the last week of school). Thank you! Hope to see you there!
Volunteers needed for lunch and the dance!
MLA needs extra volunteers for lunch and recess during the week before Winter Break (December 18th -22nd) as well as chaperones for the Middle School Dance on Friday December 22nd – if you are available, please contact
The middle school needs a DJ for their Dance on Friday December 22nd at 3pm. Contact Kimi Lee if you are available
Thank you for Dance-a-thon!
Thank you to all our MLA community that dedicated time & effort to find donations for your children to support our fundraiser. Our dance-a-thon is one of the biggest fundraisers we organize during the school calendar to raise funds for our PTSA budget. Thanks to your efforts we raised $21,260 and today we want to thank you from our heart for your participation. Remember that these funds allow us to keep offering additional programs & cover other needs that our school doesn't have budget for, like our wonderful music program offered during the school hours, supplies for our school, support for our fieldtrips & much more.
We hope to count with your help for our next fundraiser effort in March 2018, our Silent Auction.
5th Annual Online Auction
March 12-23, 2018
Join us in creating our biggest fundraiser of the year! The funds earned from the Online Auction help the PTSA’s goal of subsidizing the after-school Program, paying for enrichment programs that OUSD does not and to make up for the severe budget cuts from the district.
Volunteers for the 2018 auction
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help with the following for the 2018 auction:
• Gather donations from local businesses
• English to Spanish translators for text
So how do you get involved?
Please email Anne Burnham.
Get Ready to Show your Talent at the MLA Talent Show
In April we will have the first MLA talent show for the kids at MLA to feature their talent. All are invited to participate with whatever talent they would like to present. This is not a competition, there will be no judging just people exhibiting their multiple talents. We will be sending out more information in January so that people can sign up to participate or help with the show. It can be any talent such as dance, music, singing, doing sports or any other talent. Children will need to attend 3-4 rehearsals after school prior to the show which will be in April. More info coming soon!
