Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we have entered into the last weeks of this school year, we are amazed and in awe of the many ways in which the students and teachers have grown during this year.  One of the ways is how the students have found meaning in helping others.  Just this past month, the SNS 7th grade Confirmation class organized a schoolwide penny drive to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by raising over $2,000.  Another way is through the pop can tab drive which the third graders havealso organized and led in the schoolwide collection for the benefit of Ronald McDonald House. We have so much to be proud of and to celebrate within our school community.  Keep reading because there is more to come.

We are proud of our SNS parents, especially the parents who have regularly attended the monthly PFG meetings.  This group of parents volunteers their time throughout our building and has organized a wonderful Day of the Child celebration for the students, tomorrow, April 28th

We are also proud of our SNS coaches and student athletes who have represented our school with pride and sportsmanship qualities. On Friday, April 28th, at 6:00 p.m., our SNS student athletes will be honored and celebrated at their yearly Sports Banquet.  This banquet will be held in Hardiman Hall.

As the weather conditions improve, the Chicago construction season begins. Beginning, Monday, May 1st through mid-June, there will be many repairs to pipes and the sidewalk on 62ndStreet, between Lawndale and Hamlin avenues.  The construction on 62nd street will make entering and leaving St. Nick a challenge.  So, in order to alleviate these challenges, all students should assemble in the recess lot at the beginning of each day.  Students will not be able to assemble in front of school until the construction work is completed in mid-June.  For dismissal each day, all students will be dismissed from the recess lot at their assigned times. In addition, all parents dropping off and picking up their children should do so from the Church parking lot each day.   Please be patient with the construction conditions which are much needed and will only make our school and community better.

Also, on May 1st, the school community will crown the Virgin Mary during the 8:00 a.m. mass.  On this day, students should dress up in their Sunday best for school.  Please do not wear jeans or gym shoes to school on Monday.  There will be regular gym classes on this day.  Students should dress up and bring their gym uniform in which to change for their physical education classes.   We need to look our best as we celebrate the Virgin Mary.

The monthly Parent Focus Group (PFG) will be on Wednesday, May 3rd, at 8:30 a.m., in the music room.  Please try to attend and learn about all of the wonderful and important things happening in our school.

Save the date for our Annual Taco Night, on Friday, May 5th, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00p.m., in Hardiman Hall.  During this evening, our SNS Ballet Folklorique dancers will perform.  Please join us for an evening celebrating the Hispanic culture with good food and entertainment.  Tickets are on sale in the main office.  You need to hurry because tickets to this event sell quickly.

During the week of May 8th through the 12th, all SNS students will experience lessons in Digital Citizenship.  These lessons are grade level specific and address the areas of responsible use of technology.  A requirement for Digital Citizenship requires that every SNS family signs a commitment sheet to use technology responsibly.  This commitment sheet will be sent home with your student and must be returned to school by the end of the week.  Thank you for your cooperation with this request.

On Friday, May 12th, there will be a MORP Dance for the SNS Middle School Students (6th, 7th& 8th), from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., in Hardiman Hall.   A MORP is a PROM in which the girls can ask the guys to dance.  All students attending this dance must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  More information will be shared next week.

Please save the date for the SNS Class of 2017 Talent Show on Monday, May 15th, at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., in Hardiman Hall.  You are invited to join us as we celebrate our 8th grade students.

On Friday, May 19th, the 7th grade students will receive the sacrament of Confirmation at 7:00 p.m. in the Upper Church.  Let’s pray for these students as they are sealed with the Holy Spirit.

On Saturday, May 20th, the girls who participate in the Girls on the Run program will participate in a 5K run.  Best wishes to the girls and their sponsors as they join in this event.  It is quite an accomplishment to participate in this event.  The Summer School Scholastic book fair is Monday, May 22nd, and Tuesday, May 23rd.  This Fair is an excellent time to find your summer reading interests.

On Tuesday, May 23rd, the entire school will visit the Brookfield Zoo.  Information about this all school field trip will be shared next week. The Band and Violin concert is Thursday, May 25th, at 1:00 p.m., in Hardiman Hall.

Also, on Thursday, May 25th, there will be an Awards Mass, at 6:00 p.m., for the 8th grade students and their families.  All are invited to celebrate the accomplishments of the SNS Class of 2017.   The 8th grade trip to Springfield is Tuesday, May 30th

The end of the year Preschool Celebration is Tuesday, May 30th, at 6:00 p.m., in the Upper Church and the end of the year Kindergarten Celebration is Wednesday, May 31st, at 6:00 p.m. in the Upper Church.

The last day of school for 8th grade students is Friday, June 2nd.  This day, June 2nd, is also the graduation for the 8th grade students at 7:00 p.m., in the Upper Church.  All are invited.

The last day of school for the Preschool through 7th grade students is Wednesday, June 7th.  On this day, June 7th, there will be an awards assembly at 9:00 a.m. and the students will be dismissed for the summer at 12:00 p.m.

SNS Summer School begins on June 19th and ends on July 28th.  The hours of summer school are Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.  There is also before and after school care.  Students who participate in the summer school program receive breakfast and lunch daily.  In addition to the academic classes, students will also participate in many enrichment activities and weekly field trips.  Keep your child on track for success and register for summer school before May 31st.  Details are available in the main office.

The Attendance Interruption days for non-payment of tuition are Monday, May 1st and Monday, May 22nd.  There is no school on Monday, May 29th, in observance of Memorial Day.

Thank you for choosing St. Nick for your child’s education.  We value your partnership and are happy to be a part of your child’s success.  Together, we achieve success.
