Come meet me and the artists of the Gallery One cooperative group at the opening reception next Thursday. I will be exhibiting some paintings from my entertaining series that juxtapose still life objects with newspaper. To learn more about these works read my Artist's Statement.

New Website!

When my son decided to major in computer science I thought I'd have the luxury of an in-house IT expert and web designer, but no such luck. After he took a summer internship out of state and then headed back to college in the fall, spending barely a week at home, I decided that the only way to get the new website I needed was to hunker down with my laptop. After several weeks of serious mental-gymnastics spent  learning about WordPress, plug-ins, widgets, and cascading style sheets the site is finally up and running. Please take a look at it! The redesign now incorporates more information about my artwork and an online shop that is easier to navigate.

Mrs. Varga's Children is now part of the Permanent Collection of the

Old Lyme - Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library

I am honored that a photography piece that I created back in 2003 is now part of the permanent collection of the Old Lyme - Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library. The addition of this piece to the library's collection couldn't have occurred at a more timely moment, on the eve of long-time library director Mary Fiorelli's retirement, during the year that many of the children in the artwork are transitioning to college, and during the final year of Maria Varga's tenure. Maria Varga is retiring after about forty years of teaching in the Lyme - Old Lyme regional school district and was instrumental in developing the preschool program.  The Old Lyme - Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library has a strong connection to the Old Lyme Art Colony, having served as the site of annual end of summer exhibitions from 1902 until about 1920, when the Lyme Art Association's galleries were constructed. Works in the library's collection include paintings by the Old Lyme impressionists. A brief statement about this piece follows.

00226-Ph_Mrs_Varga's_Children_statement_for WP 2About Mrs. Varga's Children

When my daughter was in preschool, I was invited by her teacher, Maria Varga, to photograph the students of both her morning and afternoon classes. Her plan was to have some nice images to give as gifts for Mother's Day. I saw it as not only a way to give something back to a great public education program and an awesome teacher but an opportunity to create a unique type of portrait. Maria Varga is the kind of teacher everyone hopes their child will have; a teacher who refers to her students as her children and respects each one as a unique individual. For this portrait I photographed each child independently, attempting to capture their individuality, and assembled them in a matrix to form a collective whole. Maria Varga is represented by her voice in a statement (shown at right) that she wrote that hangs adjacent to the panel.
