"You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor."
~ Exodus 20.16

This Sunday, as we explore the ninth of God's covenant words to his people, we will discuss the gift of truth that God has given to humanity. While the commandment is once again given in the negative ("you shall not give false testimony against your neighbor"), it is an invitation to explore what it means to declare the truth to and for our neighbors. I invite you to read Exodus 20.1-16 prior to the service of worship on Sunday.

This past Sunday a number of us gathered after the service to explore the shifting cultural realities that have led to a significant decline in power and influence experienced by the Church in the Western world. If you missed the class  and would like to see the interactive timeline that we looked at, you can find it here. (Almost every event has a description as well as external links that can be accessed by clicking on the picture.)
As we looked at the events, we kept in mind several major shifts in the life of the Church throughout the past two thousand years that can be seen on the handout, available here.
The emphasis was not on dates or even individual events, but rather on the large cultural shifts, and the fact that, following a time of dizzying heights of influence and power, the Church is beginning to find itself in a position like its first three centuries: increasingly powerless, marginalized, and ignored. Feel free to poke around the timeline and ask me any questions you might have about what this means for the life of the Church.

That we might better pray for one another:

We give thanks for God's care for Jenni DeYoung throughout her chemo treatments, and we pray for ongoing healing and strength as she anticipates surgery and radiation.
We pray for continued healing and strength for Barbie Aukema's mother, Barb.
We give thanks that Harriet Dimidio is home from the hospital. We pray that her doctors would be able to help her control the diabetes and for wisdom as they assess her health.
We pray for Jim Conrad's mother, Ruth, as she continues her chemo treatments.
We pray for healing for Jim Pitcher, who has come down with pneumonia again.
We pray for Tilly Huizinga during the trial period of her new job, for wisdom for her and the team as they discern if the job is a good fit.
We give thanks for the success and fun that Daniella Doller and her and team experienced at Odyssey of the Mind.
We pray for continued healing for Alistair Krempel's friend James.
We continue to ask for God's presence and mighty deeds in Haiti, , and we pray for peace and safety for the people of Syria, and encouragement for the people of England following the flooding there.
We pray for family and friends: we pray for healing for Jim and Dorris Pitcher's son-in-law, Lee Allard, as he undergoes surgery and radiation for cancer, we pray for continued healing for Alistair Krempel's friend James, and we pray for safety for Ruth Giese's son, David, as he hikes New Zealand.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

2nd Offering for Project Concern:
This Sunday we have the opportunity to support the ministry of Project Concern to the people of the Chenango area in a second offering. Project Concern is likely facing some necessary remodeling expenses in addition to their normal operational expenses in the near future; you are invited to give generously.

Life Choices Center
Change for Life:
If you have not done so already, feel free to pick up one of the baby bottles in the foyer and fill it up with change. The money helps Life Choices Center in Binghamton as they provide free services and supplies to women and couples facing unplanned pregnancies.
