Jonah - Daniella Doller - with text
May 20, 2016

"The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: 'Go to the great city Nineveh
and preach against it,
because its wickedness has come up before me.'
But Jonah ran away from the LORD
and headed for Tarshish. . ."
~ Jonah 1.1-2a

How far are you willing to run in order to get away from God when God asks you to do something you really, really don't want to do, to love someone you really, really don't want to love?
This Sunday we find ourselves with Jonah in the watery depths, exploring just how far at least one man was willing to descend in order to flee the presence of the God who is willing to extend his mercy and compassion even to our enemies. I encourage you to read and reflect on Jonah 1.1-16 prior to our time together on Sunday. If you have a few more minutes (it will only take a few!) I recommend you read the entire book of Jonah in one sitting.

The painting above was painted by Daniella Doller! The original (without words) will be on display in the foyer during this sermon series.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

Reverend Alvern Gelder is Retiring (Again)!:
You thought Pastor Al retired quite a while ago. He thought so, too. Then he went and worked for Calvin Theological Seminary. Well, the Agenda for Synod 2016 confirms that he's finally going to get to retire. The agenda reads: "The [Calvin Theological Seminary] board noted the upcoming retirement of Rev. Alvern Gelder, acknowledged his years of faithful service to Calvin Theological Seminary (2011-2016), conferred on him the title of director of mentored ministries, emeritus, effective July 1, 2016, and now requests that synod acknowledge this action with gratitude to God." Let's join synod in giving thanks for Al's service and now for a well-earned retirement.

This Sunday we will have an opportunity to learn what World Renew is doing to encourage maternal and child health around the globe - and how to partner with them in their work.

World Renew Responds to For McMurray Fires:
Will you help us to restore & rebuild?
Over 80,000 people were evacuated from the city of Fort McMurray as wildfires engulfed the area and burned neighborhoods down to charred rubble. 2400 structures, including homes have been destroyed.
Shelter, food and clothing are among the greatest needs as evacuees wait at least two weeks before they can see what is left of their homes.
World Renew Disaster Response Services’ Regional Program Managers are in touch daily with emergency coordination officials to monitor the situation.
Right now, nearby CRC churches are collaborating to care for evacuees and are urgently in need of your financial support.
Will you give to World Renew DRS today to help churches and families in Fort McMurray recover from this devastating fire?
Your gift will help meet the needs of fire survivors and assist local churches as they care for displaced residents.

That we might better pray for one another:

We give thanks for the healing that Ruth Giese has experienced and for her return to our fellowship.
We give thanks for the healing both Kieth and Jerry Krempel have experienced, and pray for continued peace and healing for them both.
We rejoice with Geto and Berthide and Wilner and Marila as Geto and Berthide now have their own apartment, but their families get to continue much shared life together.
We rejoice with Tilly Huizinga in the many joys her family has experienced (new jobs, acceptance to grad school, graduations, weddings, etc.!)
We pray for continued guidance and energy for the various teams planning and implementing the community garden, and that God would guide our neighbors to join us as we seek to honor and steward his reign over all things as we garden together.

We pray for the shalom of the greater Binghamton area, and for guidance as to specific ways we as individuals and as a church might partner with God as stewards of his reign to cultivate that shalom in the city of our exile.
We pray for God's world: for the people of Alberta, CA who have lost homes as a result of the fires; for the people of southern Africa impacted by drought conditions there; for ongoing restoration, renewal, and justice for the people of Haiti; for refugees fleeing violence around the world; for those who are persecuted for their faith around the world; for God's miraculous intervention in the Middle East; for the people of the United States during this election season; for organizations fighting to protect religious liberty in our changing world.

We pray for friends and family: we pray for Deb Harmon's brother who is battling colon cancer; for peace and healing for Jim Canary's father and for peace for the whole extended family following his cancer diagnosis; we continue to pray for healing for Adam Derzanovich and for details to be worked out with insurance; for Jordan Patch's daughter; we give thanks for Inga's healing following her heart attack; for Mike Corgan's nephew who is battling heroin addiction; for healing and rehabilitation for Marcus Doller's mother; for energy and strength for Alistair Krempel; we pray for those battling cancer: for Jim and Marsha Conrad's friend Judy, for Marcus Doller's friend Scott, for the DeYoungs' niece/cousin Terri and Jerry; for the Petersons' friends Pat and Amy.
