"When he was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. He told them, 'The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that,
"they may be ever seeing but never perceiving,
and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!"'"
~ Mark 4.10-12

Mark Sermon Series

This Sunday we return to the good news about Jesus according to Mark. In this passage, Mark's story turns a slight corner as the direct opposition from the religious authorities takes a back seat to Jesus' storytelling. In the passage Jesus tells a parable about a sower sowing seeds, but even the disciples don't understand the point. Their failure to understand begs the question: why does Jesus tell these stories? We might be surprised by his answer, which refers back to Isaiah 6.8-10. I encourage you to read and reflect on Mark 4.1-20 and Isaiah 6.8-10 prior to our time together on Sunday.
We will also celebrate the feast of the Lord's Supper this Sunday, so I invite you to prepare in heart and mind to joyfully gather with your brothers and sisters in Christ around the feast set before us by Christ Jesus.

Operation Christmas Child:

This Sunday is the last Sunday to contribute to Operation Christmas Child. We still need 51 tubes of toothpaste; 10 to 12 bags of individually wrapped hard candy (lollipops, mints, butterscotch, etc.); 20 to 30 packs of crayons and small notebooks; 10 bars of soap. No liquids, please.
We will be sending 70 boxes this year, and the cost for shipping will be $490.00. There are envelopes in the foyer for you to contribute to the cost of shipping.
Thank you for your donations so far!

World Renew LogoWorld Renew Uganda:

Edward and Milly Okiror have flown to the next destination on their tour of Christian Reformed congregations in North American. Prior to their departure they conveyed their gratitude for our hospitality and the sense of joy and fellowship they experienced in our congregation. They were grateful to be able to share in both the service of worship and the potluck with us.
I would encourage you to read this newsletter from the World Renew team in Uganda to learn even more about what God is doing through Edward and his co-workers there.

That we might better pray for one another:

We continue to pray for Jerry Krempel as he recovers from surgery, that he would regain strength and remain free from pain and discomfort.
We pray for Ettienne and Wilsom as they spend the next few months in Haiti - for safety and that God would bless their work in and for Haiti.
We pray for continued healing and for energy and strength for Barb Hover during her chemotherapy treatments.
We continue to pray for Frank and Barb Lockwood.
We give thanks for many birthdays in the past few weeks and for Joe and Jan Patak's 60th anniversary!
We give thanks for God's guidance for the Valley Church council during their recent retreat.
We pray for energy, strength, and wisdom for the leaders and volunteers of Kids' Night Out as the KNO season approaches, and that parents and kids in the neighborhood would take advantage of the ministry.
We pray for Edward and Milly Okiror and their World Renew co-workers in Uganda as they participate in God's mission to transform lives and culture in Uganda.
We pray for the Faith & Finances Advisory Team as they begin planning for the Faith & Finances kick-off in the spring of 2015.
We continue to pray for God's world: for the people of western Africa as they continue to battle Ebola; for God's miraculous intervention in the Middle East, that the hearts and minds of the people living there, and that whole cultures, would begin to bend toward peace, and that God's church would continue to proclaim and embody the good news of God's reign there.
We pray for friends and family: for Beth Cunningham-Blake's great niece MacKenzie who struggles with epilepsy; for the Nelson's neighbors, the Kruzers; for Adam and Cheryl DeVoe's friend Joe Sanderson who is battling colon cancer; for for healing for Ann DeJager's sister, Toni; for the DeYoung's niece Kaylin as she battles an infection; for Dot's sister, Phylis; for Mary Wolf; for Adam Derzanovich as he continues his recovery following surgery; for Robyn Vernon's friend, Nakita, who is recovering from a concussion; for David Derzanovich's two brothers-in-law, Tim and Bill who are still battling health issues.
