Seek the shalom of the city.
October 16, 2015

"But for Adam no suitable helper was found. . . The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called "woman," for she was taken out of man.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
~ Genesis 2.20b & 23-24

"Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah."
Matthew 1.17

The Stewardship of All Things

Through Jeremiah's letter to the exiles, God told his people to seek the shalom of the city. By living. One of God's specific instructions, though, was to "marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease." From the beginning of creation the work of stewarding all things was designed to rise out of the fertile soil of family life, from generation to generation. As exiled stewards, one of our tasks is to carefully cultivate the soil of family and marriage and singleness - not primarily or initially for our own blessing, but for the shalom of the city of our exile.
I encourage you to read and reflect on Genesis 2.15-25 and Matthew 1 prior to our time together on Sunday.

That we might better pray for one another:

We pray for the flourishing peace (the shalom) of the greater Binghamton area, and for guidance as to specific ways we as individuals and as a church might partner with God as stewards of his reign to cultivate that shalom in the city of our exile.
We pray for the Kids' Night Out tomorrow, that the evening would be a blessing to the kids and their parents, and for energy and strength for the leaders and volunteers.
We pray for healing, patience, and peace for Holly Nelson, and energy and strength for the Nelson family.
We celebrate with Jerry and Claire Krempel as they celebrate their 60th anniversary.
We rejoice with the Germain family at the news of Vania's son's visa being completed and the family's reunion with him this week.
We give thanks for Jerry Krempel's successful procedure and pray for continued healing and strength for him.
We give thanks for the opportunity Robyn has to visit Annette in Europe, and we pray for safety and for a wonderful time of reunion between sisters as they tour Europe.
We pray for the participants and leadership of Faith & Finances.
We pray for God's world: for the refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe; for those who are persecuted for their faith around the world, and for those who are being called to witness to Jesus Christ with their blood; for ongoing restoration, renewal, and justice for the people of Haiti; for God's miraculous intervention in the Middle East, that the hearts and minds of the people living there, and that whole cultures, would begin to bend toward peace, and that God's church would continue to proclaim and embody the good news of God's reign boldly there; we pray for the Center for Public Justice and other organizations working to maintain religious liberty in the United States so that the Church might legally live out its faith in the whole of life in the public sphere for the common good.
We pray for friends and family: we give thanks for the healing that Janet Crawford's grandmother has experienced, and for wisdom for her and her doctors as they meet to discuss the possibility of surgery; we pray for for healing for Adam Derzanovich and for wisdom for his doctors; we pray for Jim and Marsha Conrad's friend Judy who was diagnosed with cancer; we pray that God would heal Marcus Doller's friend Scott as he battles cancer; we pray for strength and comfort for Doug and Pat Aukema's nephew Charlie and their friend Fred as they both battle cancer; we celebrate with the Byma's as they rejoice in the birth of a healthy baby to Justin's brother and sister-in-law's family.
