"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on earth below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments."
~ Exodus 20.4-6

First of all, happy new year! I hope this evening and tomorrow offer you opportunities for reflection and gratitude for the previous year, along with a chance to look forward to the gift of a new year with celebration!
On this first Sunday of the new year we will continue our exploration of the gifts God gave to the covenant people at Mount Sinai. This week we hear the second gift, or "word," which extends the first word. This second word admonishes God's people to shun any and all forms of idolatry and to remain faithful in their worship of the one true God of the Exodus. The text for this Sunday is Exodus 20.4-6, found in its entirety above.
Because of Christmas travels, many of you missed the service this past Sunday, which means you also missed the introduction to this sermon series along with the introduction to the ten commandments. If you would like to be better acquainted with the way we'll be approaching the ten commandments and the way we'll be reading them over the next nine weeks, I encourage you to listen to the sermon recording from this past Sunday, which is available, along with the powerpoint presentation, here. (Downloadable versions are always still available in this folder.)
This Sunday is also the second and final Sunday of Christmas according to the Church calendar, so we will be singing the carols and songs of Christmas for one more Sunday! (Accordingly, the painting at the top of the page this week is a detail of the nativity of Christ by the Italian artist Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, from the first half of the 17th century.)

Advent Conspiracy Update:

This past Sunday the bulletin insert said that the Advent Conspirators at Valley Church had given a total of $2911.00 to organizations that help those in need. That number needs to be adjusted based on some slips that came to me late. The actual number is $4,411.00! Praise God for those who listened to the biblical story this Christmas, and who conspired against the stories of Wall Street and Madison Avenue. Praise God for the difference it made in the lives of those who need to feel the tangible love of God through God's people.
Here's the updated list of organizations, too:
CHOW
Wyoming Conference Children's Home
the Rescue Mission
World Renew
Angel Tree
World Vision
Covenant House
International Justice Mission
the Food Bank of the Southern Tier
Christian Reformed World and Home Missions
Clark Retirement Community Foundation
Project Concern
Child Fund International
Bread for the World
and two families in need

We continue to pray for Jim Conrad's mother, Ruth, during her chemotherapy treatments.
We give thanks for God's guidance of the immigration process for Etienne's siblings, and we pray for continued blessings through the rest of the process and for provision for plane tickets and other costs of immigration.
We ask God to protect those travelling over the holidays.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

Valley Church's winter Congregational Assembly:
Our winter congregational assembly will be Sunday, January 12. We will gather upstairs for a potluck lunch, fellowship, and a celebration of the Lord's Supper immediately after the service of worship. Then we will hear the stories from a variety of people in our congregation of how God has led us in ministry, mission, and fellowship over this past year, and how God is leading us into the coming year. Please mark your calendars and be thinking about what you would be willing to bring for the potluck!
