" 'Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and until the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?' "
~ Isaiah 58.6

This Sunday we will take a break from the "Solas of the Reformation" sermon series and hear from Edward Okiror as he preaches "Untying the Cords of Injustice and Oppression" on Isaiah 58.6-8 and John 11.38-44. Edward will also share about the work he does with World Renew in Uganda. I encourage you to read and reflect on the passages above prior to our time together this Sunday morning.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

Potluck Lunch this Sunday:
We will gather for a potluck lunch this Sunday (October 15) following the service of worship to spend time with Edward Okiror, the World Renew representative from Uganda who Valley Church supports. During the potluck we will have an opportunity to talk with Edward, ask any questions we might have about his work, and enjoy the fellowship of all our brothers and sisters in Christ at Valley Church. I encourage you all to plan to stay and enjoy lunch with one another! (Our faith formation classes will be canceled this Sunday but will resume on October 22).

Pete's Story:
On this coming Thursday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m., Joel Vermaat will share Pete's Story, a presentation of his journey with his son, Pete, through Pete's life, his struggles with mental health issues, and his suicide. Joel shares Pete's story to raise awareness to mental health issues and opportunities for suicide prevention. You are encouraged to invite neighbors, friends, co-workers. We do, however, ask that those in attendance be at least high school aged or older.

Faith Formation/Education Opportunity:
Following the service on November 22 (and through the rest of October and part of November) we will continue our faith formation opportunity for teens and adults and children. The teens and adult class is “The ‘R’ in CRC: What Does It Mean to Be Reformed.” On this 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we will explore the history and distinctives of the Christian faith with a Reformed accent. In other words, we'll try to answer the question, "What does it mean to be Reformed?" Smaller children will have an opportunity to continue learning the many stories of God’s grand narrative in the Bible.

~ Valley Church ~
Gathered as God's family, we are sent into the world as agents of God's mission of renewal.

This Sunday:

Worship Service
at 10:00 a.m.

Potluck lunch following the service of worship.

That we might better pray for one another and God's world:

We pray for Doug and Pat Aukema and the rest of the Aukema family as they continue to work through the aftermath of the fire that destroyed their dairy barn earlier this week; we give thanks for protection for all the people and animals, for the outpouring of support from the community, and for the way God has worked out many of the details and logistics of the past few days. (The Aukemas have communicated that the best way we can help and support them at this time is through continued prayers for peace and guidance and love).
We pray for continued healing for Ron Crawford, Sue Brown, and Claire Krempel.
We pray for our world: for those who have been impacted by recent man-made and natural disasters, specifically for the people of Las Vegas, Houston, Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico City, East Africa, and South Asia.

We pray for ongoing needs: we continue to pray for Lor's neighbor who continues her cancer treatments; for Becky's friend Joe who is battling colon cancer; for Adam Derzanovich; for Beth Cunningham's cousin Karen; for Lynda Huizinga's niece Alexis; for Alistair Krempel; for Mike Corgan's nephew who is battling heroin addiction.
