Baptism-of-the-Lord - Copy
January 7, 2017

"And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.' "
~ Matthew 3.17

In between Christmas and Easter the church has historically focused intentionally on Jesus' life, teachings, and miracles. Matthew's gospel takes a giant chronological leap from the account of Jesus' birth to the beginning of his public ministry. (Luke contains the only account of Jesus' life between his birth and public ministry - the story of Jesus as a boy in the temple). This Sunday is the Sunday on which many churches, including Valley, will remember Jesus' baptism in the Jordan by John: the anointing coronation of the world's King and the commissioning of God's servant Son for his mission of salvation for the world.
As we remember Jesus' baptism, we are invited also to remember our own baptism, our incorporation into Christ Jesus by the work of God in the Holy Spirit. This Sunday we will also celebrate the feast of the Lord's Supper, the nourishing communion of those made and marked out as belonging to Jesus and his body in baptism.
I encourage you to read and reflect on Matthew 3.13-17 and prepare in heart and mind to come to the table with our Lord and the body of Christ tomorrow morning.

The lectures cover a wide range of topics and are presented by a wide variety of speakers. And for the past few years, Calvin has been streaming audio of the lectures (and archiving them if you can't catch it live). If you want more information or would like to listen in, please see here.
