Colossians sermon series - over all things
February 4, 2017

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
~ Colossians 3.17

"Whatever you do, whether in word or deed. . ." That means everything. This Sunday we hear Paul's call to live the whole of our lives "in the name of the Lord Jesus," the continuation of the call to attire ourselves in a new suit of clothes appropriate to who God has made us. While we will be focusing on Colossians 3.12-17, I encourage you to read and reflect on Colossians 3.1-17 prior to our time together tomorrow morning.
A whole-life, everything-you-do call such as this will require sustenance and refueling, and so we will also celebrate the feast of the Lord's Supper this Sunday, being fed and nourished by God's generous table, and being edified and empowered by our communion with our Lord and his Spirit-filled body, the church. I encourage you to prepare in heart and mind to come to the thanksgiving feast set by God for his family.

Announcements, Events, and Opportunities:

and Winter Congregational Meeting:
We will gather after the service tomorrow (February 5) for a potluck lunch and our winter congregational meeting. I look forward to seeing you there!

No Children's Church this Sunday:
The children will remain in the service with their families this Sunday and are encouraged to come forward with their parents during the Lord's Supper to receive a blessing.

Coordinator for Monday CHOW Needed:
Our CHOW pantry needs someone willing to help coordinate the Monday distribution of food to clients. The responsibility will involve a few hours in the middle of the day on Mondays. If you would like more information, please talk to Barb Lockwood.

Change for Life - Life Choices Center:
Valley Church is once again participating in the "Change for Life" campaign and filling baby bottles with pocket change (or bills or checks!) to support the work of Life Choices Center as they help couples and single mothers in the Binghamton area who are facing unplanned pregnancies. Pick up your bottle if you have not already done so! We will collect the bottles later this month.

Bread for the World Listening Tour:
Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad. Join Regional Organizer Margaret Tran and local Bread members for an evening to discuss hunger and poverty issues in the current political climate. Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, new Representative of New York’s 22nd District, and her staff are also invited. Light refreshments will be provided. The event will be held at Valley Church on Tuesday, February 7 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Can Collection for Boy Scout Troop 152:
A group of Boy Scouts from Troop 152 (Valley Church is the troop's charter organization) who are going to the National Jamboree in West Virginia in 2017 are collecting cans in a box at the east end of Valley's parking lot to raise funds for the trip.

~ Valley Church ~
Gathered as God's family, we are sent into the world as agents of God's mission of renewal.

This Sunday:
Worship Service
at 10:00 a.m.
No children's church this Sunday.

That we might better pray for one another and God's world:

We continue to pray for God's blessings for Cody, Jessica, and Hudson Zuiderveen as they move into their home and meet their colleagues and neighbors in Haiti, and as they immediately begin their work with Christian Reformed World Missions there.
We pray for healing and strength for: Ann de Jager, Chuck Huizinga, Jan Vermaat, and Elizabeth Bennett.
We give thanks for Etienne Germain's safe return to Binghamton and for his report on the work he was able to help with in Haiti, even as we continue to pray for the enormous task of rebuilding that is still needed there.
We give thanks for the learning and growth that took place at the worship symposium and conference which Florence Doller, Terry Woodnorth, and Kurt Monroe recently attended, and we pray for continued wisdom for the leadership team as they discern God's leading in the congregational cohort process.
We pray for God's world: for those whose mental health problems place them in various kinds of danger and marginalize them at the edges of our society; for the people of Syria and those who have been displaced by the war there and are now refugees; for ongoing restoration, renewal, and justice for the people of Haiti, especially following hurricane Matthew; for those who are persecuted for their faith around the world and the organizations and people fighting to protect them.
We pray for friends and family: we pray for healing, strength, and peace for Edele Thompson as she battles cancer; we pray for healing for friends and family who are sick: for Adam Derzanovich; for David Derzanovich's broters-in-law Tim and Bill; for Beth Cunningham's cousin Karen; for  Garry Wickham's father; for Lynda Huizinga's niece Alexis; for Alistair Krempel; for Mike Corgan's nephew who is battling heroin addiction.
