January 12, 2017

"Then [Jesus] told them many things in parables, saying: 'A farmer went out to so his seed. . . other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop - a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.' "
~ Matthew 13.13, 8-9

This Sunday Cody Zuiderveen will join us for our service of worship. Cody and his wife Jessica and their son Hudson will be heading to Haiti to serve as missionaries with Christian Reformed World Missions, and Valley has pledged to support the Zuiderveens.
In addition to telling us a bit about himself and his family and God's call on their lives to serve him and the people of Haiti, Cody will also be preaching. We will hear the parable of the sower and the seeds from Matthew's gospel, a passage in which we are reminded that God is the ultimate sower of the seed, and the one who makes our faith grow. But as those who have received the seed, we are all also called to join God as mission agents in his mission of salvation (i.e. as missionaries) and to participate in the process of spreading the seed of God's word to everyone we encounter.
I encourage you to read and reflect on Matthew 13.1-23 prior to our time together on Sunday morning.
Also, a link to the Zuiderveen's blog can be found at the bottom of this email.
The stained glass at the top of the email is a detail from a window of Canterbury Cathedral depicting the parable of the sower dated to about 1180.

Announcements, Events, and Opportunities:

Cody Zuiderveen Visiting and Potluck:
This Sunday (January 15) we will have an opportunity to get to know Cody after the service during a coffee hour. Then, for those who can stay, we'll have a more extended time of fellowship during a potluck lunch upstairs. I encourage you to plan on bringing a dish to share and staying for lunch with us.

Change for Life - Life Choices Center:
Starting January 22, Valley Church will once again participate in the "Change for Life" campaing and fill baby bottles with change to support the work of Life Choices Center as they help couples and single mothers in the Binghamton area who are facing unplanned pregnancies. Start saving that pocket change and plan to pick up a bottle on the 22nd!

Winter Congregational Meeting:
We will gather after the service on February 5 for a potluck lunch and our winter congregational meeting. Please mark your calendars now!

Can Collection for Boy Scout Troop 152:
A group of Boy Scouts from Troop 152 (Valley Church is the troop's charter organization) who are going to the National Jamboree in West Virginia in 2017 are collecting cans in a box at the east end of Valley's parking lot to raise funds for the trip.
