mark - who is jesus poster updated for 2016
January 30, 2016

"Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.' "
Mark 5.33-34

Just as I reminded you last week, as Jesus has cast out demons, healed fevers and paralysis and other diseases, and calmed mega storms, he has been ushering in God's kingdom and doing battle with the dark powers of evil bent on distortion and destruction of the image of God in humanity, bent on the distortion and destruction of creation itself. This week Jesus does battle again with distortion, destruction, and even death itself as he encounters two daughters of Israel - a sick woman and a young girl who dies. And once again Mark gives us, in this season of Epiphany, another unveiling of who Jesus really is. I encourage you to read and reflect on Mark 5.21-43 prior to our time together tomorrow morning.

On occasion, the deacons will use this space to encourage and equip you to act justly and to love mercy as you walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8).
If you ever come across a beggar or panhandler in your travels (or maybe even in downtown Binghamton), this article - "9 Quick Tips for Responding to Beggars & Panhandlers - from Someone Who Knows" - offers helpful guidance on how to respond. If you have a story of an encounter with a beggar/panhandler, share it with a Valley Church friend.

That we might better pray for one another:

We pray for continued healing and strength for Pete Vermaat following his heart attacks this past Sunday. We also pray for guidance for his doctors as they prepare to place two more stents in the coming weeks, and for peace and rest for both Pete and Jan during this time.
We continue to pray for healing for Ann de Jager following her surgery. We also give thanks with Ann and George at the news that Ann will not need radiation.

We pray for peace and healing for Cindy Krempel as she awaits her upcoming surgery.
We continue to pray for Sarah Peterson as she learns about her diagnosis and comes to terms with the changes it means for her life.
We continue to pray for healing, peace, perseverance, and patience for Holly Nelson, and energy and strength for the whole Nelson family.

We pray for friends and family: we pray for those grieving the loss of loved ones:
for Lor's extended family, especially her cousin Kevin and his children, as they mourn the death of Kevin's wife, Kelly; for Charlyn's cousin, Carol, and her husband Sal, who are grieving the loss of their only son; for the Rutherford and Yates families; we pray for Mike's nephew who is battling heroin addiction; we pray for healing for David Derzanovich's brother-in-law Tim; for healing and freedom from pain for Adam Derzanovich; for healing and recovery for Becky Stocum's mother; for healing and rehabilitation for Marcus Doller's mother; for healing for Alistair Krempel; for healing for Keith Krempel; we pray for those battling cancer: for Jim and Marsha Conrad's friend Judy (giving thanks that her stomach "woke up"); for Glenn Milliken and his family; for Marcus Doller's friend Scott, for Tilly Huizinga's client at Catholic Charities, for the DeYoungs' niece/cousin Terri; for the Petersons' friend Pat.
We pray for the shalom of the greater Binghamton area, and for guidance as to specific ways we as individuals and as a church might partner with God as stewards of his reign to cultivate that shalom in the city of our exile.
We pray for God's world: for ongoing restoration, renewal, and justice and peace for the people of Haiti; for the refugees fleeing violence around the globe and for governments as they respond to the crises; for those who are persecuted for their faith around the world; for God's miraculous intervention in the Middle East, that the hearts and minds of the people living there, and that whole cultures, would begin to bend toward peace, and that God's church would continue to proclaim and embody the good news of God's reign boldly there.
