the marriage at cana by Paolo Veronese - c. 1563 - Copy
November 15, 2013

"And people do not pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins."
~Mark 2.22

Mark Sermon Series

This Sunday, in Mark 2.18-22, Jesus responds to questions regarding fasting. Jesus not only answers that question, but goes on to give his audience more clues as to who he is and what he's doing. I encourage you to read and reflect on the passage prior to the service of worship.

We will also be singing a song we've only sung once previously ("Sing to the King"). You can listen to it here if you would like to re-familiarize yourself with the melody before the service. We will be singing additional lyrics not in the recording.

(At the top of the email is a detail from Paolo Veronese's painting of the marriage at Cana from John's gospel. Jesus points out the inappropriateness of wedding guests to fast while the groom is still in their presence. The feasting and revelry in the painting highlights the absurdity of wedding guests fasting while the groom is still present. You can click on the painting above for the whole picture in higher resolution).

Typhoon Haiyan:

As you probably know, the people of the Philippines are facing a long and hard road toward recovery following typhoon Haiyan. As I write, many people are mourning the loss of loved ones while struggling for survival. As we Americans approach the overeating and over-consuming celebrations of Thanksgiving and Black Friday, it is important to remember those whose experience of November 28 and 29 will be radically different; they will spend their days longing for a cup of clean water, a bite of good food, and the most basic of shelter and health care.
World Renew (formerly Christian Reformed World Relief Committee) has a presence in the Philippines and works closely with other aid organizations on the ground there, and they have made a request for aid to the people of the Philippines. I encourage you to read about and respond to World Renew's request here.

Calling All Musicians!

During the season of Advent, we'd like to assemble a group of people who are willing to help with musical leadership during our Sunday morning worship services (and possibly Christmas Eve as well). We'll be having mid-week rehearsals to help us prepare, as well as coming early on Sunday morning.  Any and all willing vocalists and instrumentalists are more than welcome!  Please talk to Jennifer Monroe if you're interested.

Sunday Service Times:
Children's Sunday School:
9:30 a.m.
Coffee available for adults:

That we might better pray for one another:

We pray for God's comfort, peace, and hope for Harriet Dimidio, Marsha and Jim Conrad, and the rest of Lucky's family as they mourn his passing.
We give thanks for the great news that Daryl Whitacre has been told that her surgery successfully removed the cancer and that she won't need to have radiation treatments.
We continue to ask for God's blessing and healing for Jenny DeYoung as she undergoes chemo and radiation treatments.
We continue to pray for healing for Claire Krempel.
We pray for the people of the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan.
We pray that Valley's youth and adult volunteers would be safe during the Super Bowl event tonight (all night!), and that they would, through the event, be strengthened and edified in their relationships with Jesus.
We pray for friends and family of Valley members: for Crystal Aukema's father's recovery from open heart surgery.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

Reverse Offering:
Don't forget to bring the items that you pulled out of the plate for the reverse offerings. You can drop them off at the collection point by the library no later than Sunday, November 24.

Meeting for Pray-ers:
I would like to re-schedule the meeting for those who pray during the service for a later date. I will keep you updated.

Christmas Tree:
If you have a tree that you think might work for the front of the sanctuary during Advent and Christmas (and you're willing to chop down), please talk to Pastor Kurt. You can reply to this email or talk to him on Sunday.

Recommended Reading:

As we spend time in the gospel according to Mark, I highly recommend a little book about Jesus and the gospels by Tom Wright that helps to place Jesus accurately in his first century Jewish and Roman context. It is called The Original Jesus: The Life and Vision of a Revolutionary. This book will help you read the gospels with an eye and ear to their historical context. It will help you understand a bit more about how Jesus would have been received and understood by those in his own day. The book is accessible, non-technical, and filled with color pictures of the places Jesus and his disciples traveled.
