"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
~ 1 Peter 2:9

This Sunday we continue our sermon series on who we are as the church, and we will hear Peter's words regarding what it means to be God's priestly people for one another and for the world.
In preparation, I encourage you to read 1 Peter 2:1-12.

Inger Thomas' Letter to Her Friends:

At the memorial service for Inger, her son Per read a letter that Inger had written prior to her death. It was written to all of her friends - to you. I reprint the letter here for those who were unable to attend the memorial service, with thanks to her daughter Sonja who forwarded the letter to me.

A Special Letter to My Friends
Thank you for everything you have been to me. You all know me well – I never kept from sharing myself with you. The memories over the years have given me so much pleasure. All the strength I had came from being part of you all. I learned from every one of you, and I hope you learned from me. I can’t begin to name all of you, but it’s good to know you will all be with me again someday. I imagine you could put yourselves in one of the places I am going to mention.
Some of the special times in my life include:
The walks in the woods
The travels we have done together
The cozy conversations over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine
The camping trips and parties
The campfires on the hill behind the house
The laughing, the crying, the hugs and kisses
The fun we had at State Park, the Children’s Home
Life in Yellowstone and in Bisbee
Staying in contact with friends from Denmark
The laughs we had at the Hilltop Campus
There is so much I want to say to you all but most of all I want to thank you for being you, for the love you gave me. I would wish you would keep up with my children and always be there for them when I no longer can be.
My favorite verse from an old song is:
"Make new friends but keep the old. One is sliver and the other gold."
You all have been silver and gold to me. God has created a new world of sliver and green and gold live that the sunset will find you glory his gift to hold.
God’s glorious gift to me was all of you, where ever you may be. When I am far, remember me. Farewell, God be with you.
     Your loving friend,

Synod 2013!

This week marks the beginning of the Christian Reformed Church's annual denominational meeting - Synod 2013. The meeting will begin tomorrow and go through June 14 at Calvin College.
We pray that the Holy Spirit would guide the deliberations of this church assembly.
Terry Woodnorth will be at synod as a member of the Office of the Deacon task force, which will be presenting its studies on the articles of Church Order related to the role of deacons within the church, and the role of the church to be deacons in and for the world. Terry has poured himself into this work for the past few years, as he has his work as deacon for Valley Church. We pray that synod 2013 would make Spirit-guided decisions that would empower the deacons of the Christian Reformed Church, and help the whole church to better understand and fulfill its role to serve and be deacon to a needy and hurting world.
You can follow all of the events of Synod 2013 here. The site has a link to keep up with breaking news, look at pictures, download the full agenda, and watch a live webcast of all the proceedings. Having watched some of the webcast last year, I can tell you that it's a lot like C-SPAN, only way better!
Sunday Service Times:
Worship: 10:30 a.m.

In the Life of Valley Church:

We continue to pray for Lor Recker-Woodnorth's mother for a full and speedy recovery from her heart surgery.
We give thanks with Wilner and Marila Nicolas as they have been informed of a July 1 interview with United States immigration officials in Haiti. We pray that the interview and all of the paperwork goes smoothly, and that they will be on their way back to Binghamton quickly with their whole family. They hope to travel to Haiti and be reunited with family soon, so we also pray for safety in travels.
We pray for Paul and Marian Hamlin. Paul was admitted to the hospital for tests on Monday, and Marian underwent hip replacement surgery on Wednesday.
