"Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, that the mountains would tremble before you!"
~ Isaiah 64.1-9

The prophet Isaiah brilliantly sums up the great cry of Advent in half a sentence: "Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down . . ." While the stores and our neighbors' decorations all indicate that we've moved into the cozy, comfortable warmth of Christmas cheer, Isaiah invites us to wait before we start chugging the eggnog and baking those cookies. He asks us to have a good look around.
Advent is the season in which we pause to prepare for God's coming in Jesus on Christmas and to prepare for his coming again, and that means waiting, watching, having a hard look at ourselves and at our world. And when we do wait, watch, and look, we might be startled by reality - both within and without, and instead of jumping directly to Christmas cheer, we might find ourselves crying out to God with Isaiah: "Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down. . ."
We will be spending the season of Advent in Isaiah, and I encourage you to read and reflect on Isaiah 64.1-9 prior to our time together this Sunday.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

Praying Together:
You are invited to join together with your brothers and sisters in Christ for prayer prior to the service each week upstairs. Luci Huizinga and Becky Stocum are helping to organize this time of prayer for our congregation, our neighborhood, and our world. You are encouraged to join them near the upstairs kitchen at 9:00 on Sundays.

snow shovelingOpportunity to Serve - Shoveling:
If you are willing to be part of the weekly rotation of sidewalk shovelers this winter, please contact Mike Corgan. The more people we have volunteer, the less we all have to shovel!

Valley's annual live nativity will be on Saturday, December 16. Please mark you calendars and invite your friends, neighbors, extended relatives, and co-workers!
