"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you."
~ Exodus 20.12

This Sunday we continue our exploration of God's ten words of gift to his people - the ten commandments. With this week's passage we move from the first part of these covenant words, which discussed human relationships with God, into the second part, which explores our relationships with other people. This week's passage looks at the foundational relationship between parents and children. I invite you to read Exodus 20.1-12 prior to our time together on Sunday.

The art at the top of the email is a detail from a painting of a peasant family gathered around the dining table by one of the artists of the Hague school, Jozef Israels, from about 1882.

That we might better pray for one another:

We ask for God's comfort and peace for Adam DeVoe's entire family as they mourn the loss of his sister, Joy Trudell. We especially pray that God would encourage and comfort Joy's husband, Jerrod, and daughter, Emily. (Please see her obituary here for information on visitation and the funeral service).
We continue to pray for God's blessing and healing for Jenny DeYoung as she continues her chemo treatments.
We give thanks for the good news regarding Barbie Aukema's mother, Barb, and ask for continued healing and strength for her as she continues her treatments for lung cancer.
We pray for God's healing for Edele Thompson, and for guidance for her doctors.
We continue to pray for Jim Conrad's mother, Ruth, as she undergoes her chemo treatments.
We pray for Etienne's brother's family as they arrive in the United States and begin their lives here.
We pray for healing for Ruth Giese's friend, Ruth.
We give thanks with Becky Stocum for her successful root canal surgery and the relief she has experienced from pain.
We remember those who are getting ready to head to Florida for the winter, asking for safety in travel, and that they would be God's agents of light and love in their southern homes.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

Special Offering for World Renew:

We will have an opportunity to give a special offering for World Renew this Sunday (January 26). World Renew is one of the few ministries of the Christian Reformed Church that does not receive ministry shares; its ministry depends on the giving of churches and individuals. The deacons are also currently prayerfully considering beginning a church partnership with World Renew staff in Uganda. For more information on World Renew in Uganda you can read their newsletter here.

Jenni DeYoung Fundraiser:

The Afton Teacher's Association is holding a fundraiser through Moe's and Hoopla! on Upper Front Street this Sunday (January 26), from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Moe's will give 15% of the pre tax sales and Hoopla will give 20% of the pre tax sales to the DeYoung family to help offset Jenni's medical expenses if you show the flier that was in the bulletin last Sunday. (Additional fliers will be available in the foyer this Sunday). You can also download the flier here if you want to show it on your smart phone or tablet.
