"When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man,
'Son, your sins are forgiven.'"
~Mark 2.5

Mark Sermon Series

This Sunday, we will explore Mark 2.1-12 together. In this passage, Jesus continues his healing ministry (back in Capernaum again), but he comes to a turn in the road as he runs into trouble for the first time with the religious leaders. I encourage you to read the passage prior to our time together on Sunday.

Daylight Savings Ends!

Don't forget, this Sunday marks the end of daylight savings time, so turn your clocks back before you go to bed on Saturday night and enjoy an extra hour of sleep on Sunday morning. But don't worry, if you forget, you'll be early, and that's better than being late!

Meeting with Greeters and Ushers:

There will be a brief meeting for greeters and ushers following the service this Sunday, November 3.

Thank You!

I want to say thank you to all of you for your words of appreciation and support, and for your gifts of appreciation, for pastor appreciation month. I am truly grateful. I think I can safely say that this congregation hasn't needed a special month for appreciating its pastor. Many of you regularly take the time to encourage me and spur me on in appreciative ways on a regular basis. I hope you know that I don't take that for granted! But many thanks for stopping to give voice to your appreciation in a very special and intentional way.

That we might better pray for one another:
We give praise and thanks for the good news that Jenny DeYoung's cancer had not spread to other organs or bones. And now we pray for Jenny and Joel and the kids as Jenny prepares to undergo chemo and radiation treatment - for healing, strength, energy, and continued courage.
We thank God for keeping the Nicolas family safe during the fire in their apartment building and for their new home. We ask for God's continued presence with them as they settle in to life here.
We give thanks for the safe and healthy birth of Jerry and Claire Krempel's great-granddaughter, Sage Anita.
We continue to pray for healing for Daryl Whitacre and for Claire Krempel.
We ask God to be present with Lucky and Harriet Dimidio, Marsha and Jim, and the rest of their family.
We pray for Ruth Giese's cousin, Ruth, as she faces significant complications from bypass surgery.
We ask for God's healing and reconciliation within families in conflict.
We pray for God's continued guidance for Valley Church as we seek to follow our king, Jesus, into his mission in this valley.

As we spend time in the gospel according to Mark, I highly recommend a little book about Jesus and the gospels by Tom Wright that helps to place Jesus accurately in his first century Jewish and Roman context. It is called The Original Jesus: The Life and Vision of a Revolutionary. This book will help you read the gospels with an eye and ear to their historical context. It will help you understand a bit more about how Jesus would have been received and understood by those in his own day. The book is accessible, non-technical, and filled with color pictures of the places Jesus and his disciples traveled.
