Colossians sermon series - over all things
February 10, 2017

"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. . . And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. . ."
~ Colossians 3.12, 17-18

For the past few weeks, we've heard Paul soaring at the 30,000 foot level, speaking of the grand themes of our new-creation lives in Christ and the new clothing that comes with that: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and on top of all of that love. This Sunday, Paul will come crashing down to ground level where he will remind us that it is our calling to work out all these lofty themes and virtues in the nitty-gritty of our households. Our life in Christ, Paul is reminding us, isn't lived in theory or from a distance from real people, but must be lived out in the context of the closest (and often most difficult) relationships: our own households and neighborhoods.
Given that our passage this Sunday is the detailed outworking of the previous passages, I encourage you to read and reflect on Colossians 3.1 - 4.1 prior to our time together this Sunday.

Pick up your bottle if you have not already done so! We will collect the bottles later this month.

A group of Boy Scouts from Troop 152 (Valley Church is the troop's charter organization) who are going to the National Jamboree in West Virginia in 2017 are collecting cans in a box at the east end of Valley's parking lot to raise funds for the trip.

Gathered as God's family, we are sent into the world as agents of God's mission of renewal.

This Sunday:
Worship Service
at 10:00 a.m.

That we might better pray for one another and God's world:

We pray for healing and strength for: Peter DeYoung, whose surgery has been postponed until next week; Ann de Jager, who begins radation treatments next week; Chuck Huizinga, Jan Vermaat, and Elizabeth Bennett.
We pray for God's world: for those in our city whose marriages, family relationships, and households are ruled not by the peace of Christ but rather are places of chaos, disorder, and danger; for the people of Syria and those who have been displaced by the war there and are now refugees; for ongoing restoration, renewal, and justice for the people of Haiti, especially following hurricane Matthew; for those who are persecuted for their faith around the world and the organizations and people fighting to protect them.
We pray for friends and family: we pray for healing, strength, and peace for Edele Thompson as she battles cancer; we pray for healing for friends and family who are sick: for Adam Derzanovich; for David Derzanovich's broters-in-law Tim and Bill; for Beth Cunningham's cousin Karen; for  Garry Wickham's father; for Lynda Huizinga's niece Alexis; for Alistair Krempel; for Mike Corgan's nephew who is battling heroin addiction.
