sermon on the mount Fra_Angelico - Copy (2) 2

"Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God."
~ Matthew 5.7-9

The discord between the picture that Jesus paints of the blessed life and the picture the world paints does not abate as we continue our journey through the Beatitudes. The world around us so often hungers for revenge, revels in impurity of heart and mind, and lashes out in violence and stirs the proverbial pot. And that's unfortunately all too often just a picture of the average household on an average day! You don't need to go to the headlines to see that Jesus' picture of the blessed life -- the one that is merciful, pure of heart, and makes peace -- is not the world's picture of the blessed life. And yet Jesus insists that his upside down picture is the condition in which true blessedness (in God's eyes) is experienced. We will look specifically at the verses above, but I encourage you, once again, to read and reflect on (and memorize if you haven't already done so) Matthew 5.1-12 prior to our time together on Sunday morning.

solar farmDetails Regarding the Council's Decision
to Solarize Valley's Energy Bill:
As we announced at the congregational meeting, this past fall the council unanimously voted to solarize Valley's energy bill, which means that we have subscribed to a share of a community solar farm. This means that the church will be supporting the development of sustainable, clean energy sources that will help steward God's creation without having to come up with the funds to install solar panels on the church building's roof. (It also overcomes the problem that the best roof we have to install panels on is on the north side of the building!). Solarizing our bill also means that we will save roughly 10% on our energy costs over the course of the year, which means that we can better steward the financial resources God has given us while stewarding God's creation as well.
The company building the solar farm and through whom we have solarized our bill is Nexamp. This way of stewarding God's creation by supporting sustainable, clean energy (while stewarding our finances) is also available to homeowners, renters, small businesses (most people who get an electric/natural gas bill in Broome County) through their solarize my bill/community solar program which you can sign up for online.

Upcoming Events and Opportunities:

An Opportunity to Support Claire Stocum:
We have an opportunity to support Claire Stocum on a mission trip through Cru to help continued relief efforts in Houston following Hurrican Harvey. Here's a note from Claire:

     Hi everyone!
My involvement with Cru at Syracuse has brought so many amazing opportunities to grow in my faith, and we have an exciting trip coming up over Spring Break. Some students from our campus are joining Cru students from around the country in Houston, TX to help with Hurricane Harvey relief. The city is still struggling to recover from this natural disaster, and I’m excited to use my Spring Break to serve the Lord and help these people. While we’re there, we’ll be spending most of our days rebuilding homes, clearing debris, and praying for those effected. There will also be time for conference events, including speakers and small groups. Including travel, this mission trip costs $600, and I’d like to ask that you would prayerfully consider supporting me. Whether that is financially or prayerfully, I’d really appreciate your help! Please don’t hesitate to email or call me, or ask my parents if you have any questions!
     Thank you!

~ Valley Church ~
Gathered as God's family, we are sent into the world as agents of God's mission of renewal.

This Sunday:

Prayer gathering upstairs at 9:00 a.m.

Worship Service
at 10:00 a.m. (preschool through 4th grade children will go to children's church part way through the service).

That we might better pray for one another and God's world:

We give thanks for Doug Aukema's successful knee replacement surgery and pray for continued healing and recovery as he transitions home.
We pray for Harry and Marilyn Myers as they continue to settle into their new home in Michigan.
We pray for ongoing healing and recovery for Emily DeYoung, Claire Krempel, Peter DeYoung, and Beth Blake.
We pray for wisdom and direction for Terry Woodnorth and pastor in the East side of Binghamton as they plan offering Faith & Finances to people in that area.
We pray for those impacted by the opioid crisis in our region and around the nation.

We pray for the ongoing needs of friends and family of Valley members: for healing for Garry Wickham's father who re-broke his vertebrae, and for his mother who is caring for his father on her own; for healing for Ryan Simmons following his surgery, and for wisdom for his doctors as they decide on a course of treatments, and for peace for his family; for healing for Terry Woodnorth's brother, recently diagnosed with prostate cancer; for continued healing for David Derzanovich's brother-in-law Tim, who is recovering from a heart attack; for peace for the Monroes' extended family in Colorado; for Becky's friend Joe who is battling colon cancer; for Adam Derzanovich; for Lynda Huizinga's niece Alexis; for Alistair Krempel; for Mike Corgan's nephew who is battling heroin addiction.
