The Pentecost - Follower of Bernard van Orley c. 1520 - Copy
June 5, 2014

"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
~ Philippians 1.21

Rejoice Philippians 1

This Sunday, as we dwell in Paul's letter to the Christians in Philippi, we will hear him continue his reflections on his imprisonment, the possibilities of execution or deliverance, and the themes of life and death. I encourage you to spend some time reading and reflecting on Paul's words in Philippians 1.18b-26.
This Sunday is also Pentecost Sunday, the day on which the Church celebrates God's gift of the Holy Spirit to those who are in Christ and the birth of the Church. I encourage you to read the story of the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 in addition to the passage from Philippians.
In addition to all of this, we will celebrate the feast of the Lord's Supper this Sunday. It is our life in Christ, made possible by the work and call of the Holy Spirit, that enables us to come to the Lord's table, so I encourage you, as you contemplate Paul's words and the story of the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, to also prepare to commune with your brothers and sisters in this thanksgiving feast.

Pete's StoryPete's Story:

At 5:00p.m. on this coming Wednesday (June 11) Joel Vermaat will be the keynote speaker at an event sponsored by the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier to encourage mental health education in schools. Joel will be telling the story of Pete's experiences with mental illness in order to inform and transform educators' knowledge about mental health and mental illness. The event is designed for educators, and Joel encourages all the teachers in our congregation to attend. I also encourage everyone to remember Joel in prayer as he prepares and delivers the talk, and I encourage you to pray that our educational community would be equipped and empowered to better care for those with mental illnesses through Joel's talk and this event. You can see a flyer with details here.

Sunday Service Time:
Worship Service:
10:30 a.m.
No Sunday School for the Summer.

That we might better pray for one another:

We thank God for the dedication and faithful work of our Sunday School teachers for this past year of Sunday School and for all the ways our kids and youth grew in their love and knowledge of God and God's great story in Sunday School.
We pray for Vivian Keller as a scan revealed a spot on her lung. She is scheduled for another scan on Friday, and then a biopsy. We pray for healing for Vivian and wisdom for her doctors as they diagnose the spot.
We give thanks for a safe return for the Krempels following Claire's hospitalization in Virginia Beach, and we pray for continued healing for Claire and for wisdom for her doctors.
We pray for the Germain family as many are travelling to Florida for the wedding of a nephew, and some are travelling on to Haiti from there. We pray for safety as they travel, and a wonderful time of celebration at the wedding.
We give thanks for the healing that Barb Hover has experienced, and we ask God to continue to free her body from cancer.
We give thanks for the healing Jenni DeYoung has experienced, and we pray that her return to work would go well, and that she would have abundant energy for the rest of the school year.
We pray for family and friends: we pray for continued healing for Jim Conrad's mother; we give thanks for healing for Tilly's friend Alan's knee and pray for his upcoming surgery; we continue to pray for the DeYoung's 3 year old relative Kaylin as she awaits heart surgery, and for her parents Tony and Tawni and brother Micah; we pray for healing for Elizabeth Bennett's friend Terry; we pray for healing for Jim and Dorris Pitcher's son-in-law Lee Allard who is undergoing cancer treatments.
